I have a 2014 Impala LTZ Limited. My last oil change I got my filter at Napa. It's time for my next oil change I I noticed that there are 2 sizes of filter available for my car. I am looking at getting a M1 and the sizes are M1-113 and M1-212. The 212 in longer them the 113. I double checked the Napa website and it also gave me 2 sizes. I never noticed this before. My question is, other then capacity is there a differance ? Would one be more beneficial then the other ? They both are the same price.

Thanks in advance.

In cases where people like to "upsize" against the filter-maker recommendations, I advise against it due to warranty issues. However if you actually have two different "recommended" filters, pick the one that makes you happy.

Your brain is going to notice a difference; for any sane OCI, the engine never will.

Which one matches the size of an AC Delco filter you would get at a Chevy dealer's parts counter? That's the one I'd get.

Bigger oil filter with the same price. That sounds great...

I think most of the newer GM V6/V8s use a PF64, PF63 or PF48. And then there's an e-core version in PF48E and PF63E. All M22 thread.

IMHO...

If your vehicle recommends the taller PF63/PF63E, stick with it.

If the PF64 is recommended, you can opt for the taller PF63/PF63E. They have the same pressure relief valve spec, too. PF48/PF48E PRV spec is lower.

No harm in going larger if its an option, but just make sure the "guts" are comparable (esp. the PRV).

What we have is a case where someone has a difficult time reading the application chart.

For the 2014 Impala there are (2) engines.

Mobil 1 oil filter application.
2.5L M1-113
3.6L M1-212

A filter's bypass valve setting is also dependent on the design of the filter itself (media flow resistance, media strength, total media area). So 10 different brand of oil filters all specified for the same car may have some differences in their bypass valve pressure setting.

I think your filter, because you have the 3.6 L V6, would be the M1-212. The other suggestion is for the 4-cylinder Impalas, you haven't noticed this because they are newer. Your "2014 Impala", being "Limited" is actually a 2013 Impala that GM is still making. In other words, they made the older and the newer ones (yours had the 3.6 standard, after 2014 the 3.6 was optional). That's why there are two options. So, you want the M1-212. I bet if you looked in the book for a 2012 or 13 Impala, that's the filter size you'd find. Confusing, I know. But keep that in mind.

Here, I searched on Advance's website for your application. Take a look there.
AAP Filter

And here I searched the 4 cylinder 2014 Impala (new body style)

By the way, enjoy the Impala. They're nice cars, especially with the 3.6.

Same subject but different filters/vehicle:
I bought some DriveWorks oil filter from AAP and Fram Ultra. I'll be using DW4612/PH6607 for 6 months OCI and Fram Ultra for 12 months OCI. Both will not exceed 7,500 miles.

Filters Height in
PH7317 3.469
DW4612 2.930
PH6607 2.625

No advantage to using a larger size filter than called for. However it does make some feel better.

On my wifes new 2015 GMC Terrain DENALI with the 3.6 the Wix filter is the 57045 which replaces a AC PF63, it is longer than the PF63 and PF63E, I use the 57045 on my 2008 Malibu LTZ with the 3.6 also, only advantage to a longer filter is increased oil capacity and filter media.
