Why not change the oil every 3,000 miles, instead of having several quarts of old oil when you don't have to?

Because people change their oil WAYYYYYYY before the TBN is gone!

This could be where those oil analysis things come in handy. Kira

ps Re the big California fleet study mentioned earlier (or any other relevant study).
Maybe at 20 microns (if you're lucky) oil filters are just rock catchers and, like air filters, get better with some use.
Just a thought. K

actually changing oil every 1000 miles would be the smartest / safest choice?

I ran a 15,000 mile oil change and a Fram Ultra for 20,000 miles. The OLM/manual told me to change both every 10,000 miles. The car buns about a quart of oil every 5,000 miles and I used a synthetic and the oil analysis came back fine. I found the filter black in color and it had carbon build up where the pleats meet the end caps. Filter was used to long in my opinion.

for any vehicles besides lawn tractors I change the filter everytime. As mentioned many times before, why introduce old oil to the new. Small tractors which don't get much use besides an hour or so a week I will change the oil seasonally and the filter every other. Been doing so for many years w/o any issues. Fresh oil / Fresh Filter for anything above a John Deere

I know some manufactures recommend replacement of the oil filter ever second oil change. I'm thinking I'm going to go this route myself and just wanted to feel out people opinions on the idea.

Every oil change. I do not see the point of saving $5 to change it every other oil change.

I buy filters on closeout and in bulk and usually pay <$4 each. Most actually come from Rock Auto closeouts for $1 each. So I change them every OCI. All of my engines have VVT systems that have oil control valves and screens that are sensitive to contamination. So why chance a $150-$2,000 repair to save a filter? Not very smart IMO.

Now, that's a great idea!
My son just changed the oil and filter in my truck this past weekend. I went with full synthetic 10W30 VML and a FU oil filter. That should be good for 5K miles.

I switched to every other OCI now. Makes for a faster/easier oil change and I believe it's more environmentally friendly. It's not a cost issue. If you have a sludged, dirty or unknown engine situation, I'd change it every time until the used filter looks good after a run.

I have a bunch of classic purolator oil filters I bought on clearance for my beater. I now do 5000 mile OCI w cheap syn blend 5/10w30 and replace filter everytime. I change the filters after 1 OCI in all my vehicles

I have one cousin that states the same thing. He completes the statement by saying that everyone knows he's lazy when it comes to PM (Preventive Maintenance), so it fits him.
Just sayin..............

I change my filter every time regardless, only takes a whopping 2 extra minutes to do.
It would feel like putting dirty underwear back on after a shower if I didn't change the filter with fresh oil!

And whenever the store has a sale on oil and a filter, it's a no brainer. Cheaper to buy the oil with the filter than the oil by itself most cases.

So many comments about how changing your filter with an oil change gives you all new oil, 100 % fresh oil, etc. I just don't believe this to be true. There is a certain amount of retained oil, not evacuated by the draining and filter removal. Ever broken down an engine? There is oil everywhere, even with the oil pan completely removed. Every nook, cranny and cavity in the engine is pooled with oil. Of course, each engine will vary somewhat.

My point is that some of the old oil will go with the used filter, but it is certainly not all the used oil in that engine.

In other words, you're already showering with your pants on, so who cares about whether your socks are on as well?

That would interrupt my 38 year history of doing 10K OCIs. 38 years! That may be longer than you are old.

Running oil more than 3,000 miles is like not taking a shower at all.

Engines with oil coolers will be retaining entire quarts of oil. I've never heard of or seen engine failure or early wear from engines with oil coolers.

Impossible! There's no way an engine with used oil can survive!
