Sorry if this seems dumb, but I want to change the oil filter half way through my OCI (cheapo proline filter with GC). The vehicle has a oil filter that is mounted in a down position. If I were to change the oil filter with the oil still in the engine, would engine oil pour out of the hole that the oil filter threads onto? I am sure that it will drip some, but will it gush out? I would hate to waste perfectly good green GC. I am planning on running the GC to about 7k with a filter change at 3500 miles.
Thanks in advance!!

The basic answer is----no.

Only if the motor is running will the oil "gush" out. It takes the oil pump to create flow...

It is best to wait until the oil has drained from the upper end of the engine to the oil pan. Otherwise you could lose "some" oil..

Not dumb. I did this very thing with my Toyota 22RE 4 cyl over the weekend. Off came the FRAM thats been on for at least three years and on went the AC PF53. Dripped maybe a tablespoonful of oil from the mounting pad.

Well, the FRAM wasn't leaking and it had the black gripper material on the end, so I simply reached up and unscrewed it by hand. Looked in the end with a flashlight and didn't see anything that looked amiss in any way. Not sure how FRAM got such a bad rap...

Me neither

My issues with Fram center on their pricing, given the materials used, not their performance. Frams're engineered to a production cost point and priced on the basis of their brand identification. Definitely a money-maker for Honeywell, but they're not the source of Original Sin.

You're paying for all their marketing--

TV ad's, racing sponsorships, and all those "free" items they giveaway..

Boaz, In school I learned that there are no stupid questions. Just stupid answers.

You can change the filter and will only lose what oil is trapped in the oil filter and filter housing.(maybe 2-4ounces.)I also recommend changing it on a cold engine for burn safety.

Boaz,

You won't have any problems going 10K miles with a Proline (Purolator clone) filter.

WOW really? Cool... I let it go till oh... maybe 6500-7k...

Well, pardon me! Maybe you could enlighten me regarding my effect upon your epidermal layer? We might call this problem you are experiencing "paresthesia"--a neurological manifestation of decompression sickness. Do you SCUBA dive? Please do use the proper decompression schedule. Or perhaps you perform high altitude flying in anunpressurized airplane? Proper prebreathing of 100% oxygen before exposure to pressures less than 320 mmHg will help make that less dangerous. If its pediculosis, I might recommend a product sold under the trade name Kwell.
