I wouldn't buy it either. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that I'm OCD and change the filter every time I change the oil, despite what the owner's manual might say allowing two intervals, and despite the fact that there are some very good filters on the market. However, I admit that I'm the nutty one, not the OEMs or the filter manufacturers.

The 4.0 filter is in a real easy spot, it's right under the truck about halfway up the right side of the block hanging down vertically wide open access. Guess I don't see the reasoning for this. Now if the truck had a 3.0 then I can see it, that filter flat sucks to get to!

those tea cup filters work well until FULL then they just bypass the oil WITHOUT filtering which will prolly not be noticable!!! my 4.0 frontier with its small access plate is not that bad but a PITA IMO, for me its getting a bigger filter with more dirt holding capacity.

My 2.5 Frontier also has the tiny filter, but I've never gone farther than 7600 miles before changing the oil and filter so it is highly unlikely to ever reach capacity. I have done all the oil changes myself except for the one free service the dealer gave me.
