I recently purchased a Audi a8 quattro 4.2 fsi and had the oil and filte4 replaced. The filter came with (2)o-ring(s). The shop said that the second o-ring wasn't needed. Since then,I've noticed it now has a leak. I'm not a mechanic but why would the filter have (2)o-ring(s) in the box with new filter? I hope someone will explain to me how to fix this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Does the canister have a little drain plug? Sometimes those take the 2nd o-ring.

The other scenario is it's a one-size-fits-two filter and it's easier to throw two o-rings in versus stocking two different part numbers.

Have you confirmed that the leak is actually from the oil filter area, and that it's not left over old oil that dripped during the change?

I would wait a couple of days, not sure on the 4.2 but on my 2007 A6 3.2 the filter was up top. If oil change was done sloppy oil could be spilled on engine which might log which might look like a leak. Torque to 20ft/lbs

Pet Peeve of mine is when an oil changer does not use all the o-rings provided right in the filter box. There is a reason these o-rings need to be replaced and the large ring on the cap is what's keeping the oil in the car. Most filters come with black nitrile style and they compress and harden up so they need to be replaced. Some of the better orange, blue, green colored ones are much better rubber and can be reused a few times but that's a risk you take.

I don't pull the Toyota drains ;)

Get the shop to fix it.

I don't pull the one on my Mazda either. Makes a big mess either way, so not worth digging out the 6mm Allen wrench. Honestly not sure why they even bothered complicating the design with a useless drain plug in the filter cap. Haha
I haven't seen the Mazda setup, but the Toyota feels overengineered to me.

My other pet peeve is that we're all supposed to be "green" and I'd argue that's evident in the 0W20 spec for the 3.5 V6. But then every filter must come with an extra o-ring I don't use, a plastic pacifier I immediately throw in the trash, AND all that's in a little heat sealed plastic bag.

I'm not on the "green" train, I just find hypocrisy and environmental theater annoying.
