Oil filter now compromised? Rubber gasket popped off.

When I changing my oil and installing my oil filter PF63 on gm 5.3L the oil gasket popped off the filter, I placed it back on and screwed on the filter but am I now at risk for it leaking?

I remove the base gasket and clean out the gasket groove on all my filters before installing. Never a problem. Got in that habit when the yellow painted PureOne filters had paint over spray all over the base end, including inside the gasket groove.

I received a ACD PF64 filter from RockAuto.com with the base gasket removed from the filter...I was assured by many on this Forum it should be fine to just replace the gasket on that filter and I agreed...

this filter resided attached to the GF's 2013 Malibu 2.0T for nearly a year and 3K miles with the engine filled to spec with D1G2 (at the time) Mobil 1 5W-30...oil level at time of oil change showed full on the dipstick and upon removal, there were no signs of leakage anywhere...

I wouldn't worry unless you see damage to that filter...in the case above it was just unattached to the PF64...good to go

Thanks for the heads up, I’m going to be monitoring it but sounds like it should be a non issue.

I bet cleaning that tenacious paint added a little time to that oil change.

Note: The cataracts I had on both eyes looked remarkably similar to yellow paint overspray. I always assumed cataracts were dead cells of some sort....they're proteinaceous deposits.

I usually inspect and clean filters right after I buy then, then seal them in plastic in the box so they are ready to go when I do the oil change. I simply used carburetor cleaner spayed onto a Q-Tip to clean the gasket groove ... words well.
