Can an oil filter cause a little hesitation during startups? Making story short, i've just bought a new 06 nissan titan v8, changed my own oils about 5 times already using mobil 1 5w30 syn and pureone filter. Never had hesitations during startups, but after changing the oil filter recently, i've been getting hesitations during the startup. Is it the filter? Will this hesitant startup cause significant wear on my engine? I forgot to mention that i usually do WOTs (once a week and up to 4xrpm = maybe filter media is jacked up?).

The only way I could see that happening is maybe if the filter is clogged or stopping flow. Sounds like you have problems else where. What is the condition of your spark plugs and how many miles are on the truck?

Do you mean that you have delayed ignition? That is, it cranks longer then usual??

I first thought it was the spark plugs also but i havent checked it yet. Thinkin that this engine is brand new with only 9000 miles and factory spark plugs are platinum-tipped, i dont think it can be the case, but i guess i can never rule that out either. Hesitation during startup.... i kind of meant that the engine has some difficulty turning over. Usually it starts right up like within a nano sec, but now it seems like it takes about 1.6 sec. Delayed ignition seems to fit the scenario becuause it does seem to take longer to crank up the engine.

I don't think it is related to your oil. If anything, I would suspect that the ECU is adjusting for a change in fuel quality or temperature...that's just a guess though.
Going from "nearly instant" to 1.6 seconds to start and engine is nothing to be concerned about.

Hey there's another thought, thanks michaelc80. Temperature has been weird down here in Texas for a few days. One day was 90F and the next day the high was only 71F.
But today it's alot warmer and it does not take that long to crank. so hopefully it's just adjusting to the temp.?? i just hope it is.
New ethanol enriched gas would be my guess as to the problem.

Now if you had said that it was sub freezing and your engine cranked slower ..so it caught a little later ..fine. I use 5w-40 year round and sure ..my little 4 banger cranks a bit slower during colder days.
So if anything (and still unlikely given your 70-90F range) the OIL would contribute to slower cranking and the subsequent later ignition.

Lol, well thanks for all the inputs!! Really calmed my nerves down. Overall, i think that the ECU is adjusting to the new ethanol gasoline ive been using and along with the varying degrees in temperature over the past few days may have account for the long cranks... Hopefully this topic will rest in peace

-Jmacmaster, i know what you're thinking haha... well since i brought it up, my first oil change was 400 with havoline (conventional), then at 1200 w/havoline again, 2500 w/havoline, 5000(Mobil 1 new Truck & SUV), and recently 9000(Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w30 again). I really cant wait to send in UOA of this stuff. Hopefully it turns out ok but i really want to compare this to the pennzoil platinum and the "regular" Mobil 1 5w30. Im just an oil head like many of you guys here in BITOG, which im proud of! I just love the fact that everytime i talk to someone i know about oil/filter/cars etc. they tend to think that im insane. I just love the looks on their face, priceless stuff.
