Oil + filter hoarders

Ah, to each his own. I have 0 quarts of oil in my stash
My inventory is basically just enough for top-offs, if needed, between oil changes for the 5 family vehicles I service.

I have:

Pennzoil Platinum 0W/20 = 2 quarts left from a 5 quart container.
Pennzoil Platinum 5W/30 = 2.5 quarts left from a 5 quart container

In all my shopping, I’ve never run into a clearance special by any of the stores I shop at.

Oil hoarding is dumb. I used to be a hoarder, not anymore. Why? You're never going use that 100 quarts you got on sale hitting like 10 different auto zones. Half the hoarders have like 2 cars, maybe 3. By the you use it up, in like 10 years lol, you'll want the newest oil technology anyway. So you'll give it away lol
Again, how do you know others oil use scenarios?
I buy oil I am going to use. The bulk of the oil I have is 5w-30 and 10w-30.
I change oil on 7 vehicles. 6 of them can use this oil. Only oddball vehicle is the motorcycle.
Average of 5 qts per change. If I change 2x a year, my 159 qts will last just over 2 years.
In reality I have closer to 3.5 years of oil since not all get changed twice a year.

I have been "hoarding" oil for almost 20 years, and have never had to give any oil away.
So your entire post above is 100% wrong.

On this topic:
  • I have never seen clearance oil in my life.
  • How are folks finding the price errors?
  • How much time is allocated to the two bullets above?
  • Is there some rebate scheme involved in the "pennies on the dollar" stashes?
  • There seems to be a thrill involved for some in building their stash.
  • If you have a stash do you spend time with it...looking...touching...photographing...cataloging?
  • Anyone ever have an oil stash on the show Hoarders?
  • Does hoarding...er...having a stash encourage more frequent/unnecessary oil changes?
  • Do folks have to keep the stash full i.e. always adding at the same rate as use?
Many questions...

Well, this is a community of enthusiasts that you have been a member of for 14 years and 6,233 posts, you should expect outliers. You have spent a large amount of time and effort with the FCP Euro oil returns and warranty sharing information for the greater good which is commendable. Other’s share the same information in the deals section. Others buy and resell. Others buy and hold like investors. Many hoard.

You (and others) are however treading a fine line of calling out folks and baiting vs being helpful and thinking that gives you a free license. Hence this thread is a dearth of contributions. Do a surveymonkey survey, dont be a troll. 🤷‍♂️

I second your rather astute dissertation....

I have no free license...I want answers to these important questions that I think of everytime this topic gets posted. The title of the post has hoarders in it and there are photos of '00s of qts of oil in folks' redidences...it should be obvious that you'll get some of these types of responses.

FOMO is a huge negative feeling. not bragging about not being FOMO’d is even harder to resist. I freely admit to being guilty. I saw the fiasco back in march and can only imagine how many upset folks there were. so much so that the mods added a new rule to the deals section.

Here is a better argument in my opinion to discourage hoarding, compare heating oil costs vs motor oil. Idiots :)

Ok...can you tell me what FOMO is and what the fiasco involved? I really don't know what this is 🤷‍♂️ What rule was added to the deals section?

Edit. FOMO = fear of missing out

I'm going to reply in case you're not actually trolling. Sometimes it is hard to tell with you.

1. How? It used to happen annually at almost every auto parts store in the fall. They're always posted here.

2. That I don't know. Someone here said pricing error, I clicked "buy." It worked?

3. I'm on BITOG anyway and drive 40k/yr between my three vehicles... If there's a supposed clearance I'll poke my head into an auto parts store while driving around.

4. I only do rebates when they coincide with already cheap oil. I saw some Valvoline for $15/5qt, so I claimed the rebate too. $10/5qt ain't bad. That oil was on the clearance rack when I was ordering a part for my Isuzu.

5. Yeah scoring a deal is fun.

6. No, just add/remove it to/from the list.

7. No.

8. Sometimes, especially if you're working on something different already. "May as well change the oil."

9. No. Mine fluctuates. I drive a lot and do oil changes for family and friends. "Just bring a filter." A buddy is mine just got another GTI after years of *barf* Toyota ownership, so I'll probably take him most of my 5W-40.

The cost savings are real, IMO. The last oil change on my Touareg cost me $18. Oil changes on my Odyssey are $15. On the Isuzu, $11. Multiply that by 4, 2, and 2. It would be much more expensive if I paid retail.

Everyone in my family gets changes for the cost of an oil filter.

Idk man. If my one thing is buying clearance oil when I find it, I don't think I'm that bad off.

Ahhhh ok. Thanks. So this was taking advantage of a pricing error...I just looked at the deals section rules post and see that.
FOMO moves financial markets, creates subforums, couponer websites, it drives the US economy for better or worse. The opposite is Ho Chi Minh who wanted to help millions of people from starvation, but he was really motivated by the same exact thing except it was human lives.

I like to keep people on their toes.

Just never noticed...and I do frequent auto parts stores and Wallyworld. I'll have to keep a better eye out.

This I know from my experience when I have some supplies "in stock" - more likely to do it but I'd argue if you have a big stash you likely overchange your oil but each/own on that.

Many with stashes note they give away oil/do changes for folks - got it.

Yes for sure. I just do ST for the older vehicles so those changes are ~$25. My FCP/VWs are basically free at this point.
Everyone in my family gets changes for the cost of an oil filter.
That's a nice gesture.

Oh for sure!

I don't drive around looking for oil clearances either. I once found some supertech for a buck a quart, but I was at Walmart for something else.

I will put things in my walmart or Amazon cart and sometimes they get cheaper sitting there. I got 5 - 5 quart jugs of Chevron Supreme 5w-30 for 11.99 at Walmart a couple years ago that way. I think they were changing the bottle style or something. Its almost gone now.
I did get in on the 6 quarts of Valvoline Semi Syn for I think $11 on Amazon - someone posted it here. I also do the M1 rebate.

I always have at least a couple oil changes for all my vehicles, but have had as many as 5 or 6 if its cheap. I never buy oil that won't work in vehicles I have.

Rights now I have maybe 50 quarts as a guess, which is likely normal for me.

I said in a previous thread that once my stash was depleted I would move to HPL, then my stash grew with Total Quartz clearance so it will be a while longer. I am embarrassed to show my other shelf with my filters and the HDEO oils.
So just sell all of it? This is the issue as I see it with this practice. I usually have a few changes available for my vehicles but that's it.

There seems to be a thrill involved for some in building their stash.
When CDs first came out a guy I knew said, "And you see the stack growin''. His eyes rolled back into his head as if possessed.

PERSONAL TALLY: I have 2 transmission D&Fs and 4 "0-20" oil changes for the "Mazdas".
I'm a little ahead with 0-20 because once upon a time there were 2 Mazdas in the family and we're down to one now.
1) Space became a premium even though I never had anywhere near the mega-stashes pictured here.
2) To repeat: Many of us here, excessive hoarders or more normal people, are just a pinhole away from rethinking their strategies.
3) The closest thing I ever had to a stash was when Valvoline MaxLife transmission fluid was on half price at AZ. I'd buy 5 pair of jugs (came to $22 each pair) and thus got a free pair. I was doing catch-up maintenance on everyone's vehicles and went through it all.
3a) Memories of those $11 gallons of MaxLife make me cry.
4) Seriously, avoiding the severe, post Covid price gauging is one thing stash holders can boast about.

For me personally I do oil changes for Family and friends 12 vehicles a year with 2-4 OCIs (5000 mile oil changes). Close to 200 qts per year so in reality a I have 2 approx year supply? I even provide filters for some if their cars take the same ones I use.

The thrill is in getting some savings and being able to share with people.

There definitely are oil clearances, For years I would just buy the oil as needed, and people would bring oils and filters and I would change it.

For the price I paid for this oil I can do 4 or more changes for the price of one.

I keep my stash organized as I store it so I make sure it all gets used with the oldest first. But no I do touch or catalog the, I place them by group when I I first store it and as a space opens it get filled with replacements
So just sell all of it? This is the issue as I see it with this practice. I usually have a few changes available for my vehicles but that's it.
No do not sell any of it.
