Long time lurker here. Trying to find a good filter. I use mann/mahle cartridges on my bmw 330. To show what I know, ive been using pure ones in my wife's mazda6 v6. My OCI on that car is 5-7k miles. Im looking for a good mid range filter that would fit the bill. If i get good suggestions, i promise to cut open the pure one that I remove...

I always figured if I used decent oil, then the filter didn't matter too much. If it was me, for a 5k OCI I'd just price shop.

If you have amazon prime, or even ebay access, you might be able to get filters on the cheap, if you order multiple ones at once.

Keep using Mann and Mahle on your BMW.

For the Mazda, the best choice would be CQ Red

The ultra would be my choice for two 6500 mile runs on a good dino you can also go anything Wix as long as Wix does not change the way they make their filters. A year ago i would have said Motorcraft but there have been some reported problems with Motorcraft quality although i never had a problem to date with that filter. By the way welcome to BITOG.

An ultra could handle three 6500 runs no problem.

I hear they make nice screen doors.

That's $3.75 an OCI...a bargain

This!

Wix was my go-to when it was sub $6. Now they are $9 everywhere and not worth that premium to me.

To answer the OPs "common man" question - I order Bosch and Denso filters for sub-$4 when I get parts from RockAuto. They have great prices on Mann and Mahle, too.

The other day I was in a Walmart and the Fram Ultras were $4.50 for my two applications (xg3600 and xg3593A). That was a real deal to me so I grabbed a few. Other applications were $9, so that seemed a good value to me.

That's interesting.. XG3600 for $4.50 at Walmart seems like an awsome deal. There was someone else here who posted about getting an XG3600 from AAP for about $5. The XG3600 are also on sale on Ebay right now for $5.91 shipped, while all the other FU filters are in the $8 to $10 shipped. I wonder if there's some redesign or newer version of the XG3600 coming up, which explains why they are blowing out the old inventory on clearance.. Maybe the XG3600 is being redesigned to slightly shorter length like the FL-400S?

Agreed , around here a Wix is about the same price as a Fram ultra

Also I hate the wavy wix media...
Napa silver is pretty cheap or get an OCOD/tough guard.
