oil filter for 2 OCIs

so who else leaves their oil filter on for 2 OCIs? i use pureones on all my cars now and am thinking about going with a synthetic media filter and leaving it on for 15,000 miles (2 OCIs). i'm mainly doing this so that i won't have to deal with the mess of taking off the oil filter on every change. i have a fumoto valve on the cars so i literally make no mess other than when the filter comes off. and it's a pain to get oil everywhere just for that. the other benefits would be reduced cost and less waste.

the only thing that concerns me is the oil that's trapped in the filter during the oil change will end up being in the engine for these 15,000 miles. i usually use the cheaper synthetics and i'm not sure how well they will hold up.

i also wish there was more of a cost benefit to extending the oil filter life. i can get 2 pureones for about the same price as 1 "top tier" filter. and the pureones have better efficiency.
 
i change mine every other change..(I do it Not to save money (we pay about $2.00 for group 7 oil filters at my shop) i do it because i don't like the dry start when putting on a new oil filter.

i didn't even think of that. i guess that would be another benefit.

how much oil is actually left in the filter during an oil change? would you say 1/2 quart?
 
it can be up to a quart depending on the filter,engine and location of the filter...i have never left an oil filter in over 10,000 miles i also change my oil every 6 months or 6000 miles... years ago i used to do oil changes every 3000 miles but times have changed and oil has improved so much... I always tell my customers to change their oil after we rebuild their engines at 3500 miles the first time and 6 months or 6000 miles thereafter

Why don't you just fill the new filter with fresh oil PRIOR to to installing it....it will eliminate most dry starts.
 
I've run K&N, Mobil 1, Bosch D+, Purolator Classic and P1 filters, "2X back to back", never had any problems. However, I do run oversized filters instead of the OEM specified "tea cup" filters on my T4R.

On my last Oil Change I DID change out a Bosch D+ after only 1 8K run.

I changed the filter out since I used "Kreen" motor tonic for the last 1K miles of a long, high speed, RT, highway run with a gallon of T6 and 2 quarts Shell Synthetic 5w30 oils.

What vehicle / engine is the culprit of this oil filter removal mess?

Just curious! You cited using cheaper synthetics. Which one for 7.5K?

it's a 2008 focus. the filter is positioned vertically underneath the engine so when i loosen it the oil just starts oozing down the sides of the filter. it's probably better for the car this way but i almost wish it was sideways instead.

i usually use Quaker State Ultimate Durability for 7500 OCIs because it's a quality synthetic for cheap. sometimes i will use others (such as synpower in my sig) when they are on sale for cheaper.
 
Less messy options....

1) You can hold your empty, plastic oil catcher upward when loosening the filter.
2)You can drill a hole in the bottom corner of the filter - which streams the contents in any direction you desire. Once the oil is removed, then unscrew the filter.
 
Since I use synthetic oil I change my filters once during the OCI. On my Caddy and my daughters Chevy, since the filters are top mount cartridge type, I go 2 filters per OCI.

your filters should easily be able to do 1 OCI. unless you're going like 20,000 miles or something.
 
I now change the oil flter at every change based on the used oil analysis and particle counts. The particle counts showed that the level of contaminents increased from 16/15/12 to 17/17/14 using the same unemptied filter.
 
I'm sure you are right but it just helps me sleep better at night. I have problems with goosebumps and hair standing on end once the oil hits 4,000 miles... I was raised on; "NEVER MORE THAN 30 days or 3,000 miles on the oil!"
I have no problem going to 6 months or so but the mileage thing bothers me. I do soak the new filters in oil prior to installing to minimize the dry starts. YES it is messy. I do it in a pan and I put the spillage into the bottle for my OPE's and or chainsaw bar oil bottle.

The cartridge filters I have to use are too small for my liking but I have no choice. I do buy the OEM filters though. I tried others including Pure 1's but they distort during use. I believe they may be a hair too long.

Crazyoldude,

Maybe it doesn't completely eliminates dry starts... but it does cut back on the time it runs dry....sometimes to where it almost eliminates it.....agree?

i don't see how you could debate that. i try and do it with the downward mounted filters, but it's too messy if the filter's sideways. i really don't think 1 dry start every however thousand miles is that big a deal though.
