No, I change the filter then. I am sweating about the oil though. I leave it in till the MM hits around 20%.
Normally around 7,000 or so.

The only time I change it that soon is in the Ford when we go on vacation with a rooftop carrier and luggage bag on the roof for a couple / few thousand miles. I love that the roof rack can fit both. The manual calls for 3,000 mile OCI for that type of use.
 
My thinking exactly. There is certainly a difference in how long it takes for the pressure to come up between a dry filter and one with oil soaked media.

The sound of a completely dry startup is like nails on a blackboard to me.
I never said I was normal...

Probably not enough to make a real difference but I feel better about it.

you could try part filling the filter for the horizontal mounts. That is what I used to do with my Saturn. As to your original post, lots of people run a filer twice. I'm pretty sure Honda still calls for this practice. You might want to step up to a premium filter to go that long though, but I wouldn't be surprised if a P1 or Wix could handle it.

I don't pre-fill anymore, I can't on the G5 so I figure the G6 should be ok too. Another part is the thread a while back about there not being any specification for the cleanliness of new oil so why not just filter it all. The G6 doesn't mind but my Son's Saturn did ratlle on a dry filter and like johnachak, it caused those little hairs on the back of my neck to stand up.
 
I think the quality filters can last out 15,000 miles especially if they are oversize. Bosch distance +, Fram Extended Guard, and the best Mobil filters can do it, Amsoil and some others.

Heck, back in 1978 I recall some car makers recommending this. Today's oils and filters are better.

I think a Pure One is able to do this too.

i know the filters can go the distance, i just don't know whether or not i want to leave that old oil in there for that long. this oil should still be good, it just won't have many additives left correct? but when the new oil goes in it will mix with the old. doesn't seem like it would do any harm to have the old oil left in the filter.
 
I would not be concerned about the old oil. It is only a quart at best, and the new oil will raise the numbers. If you use a good synthetic, it is no concern. If you use a good dino, I would not be worried either.

Filters have mileage limits like any car part. The basic ones like the OCOD will reasonably do only one oil change at 6000 - ish miles, the better (like the Bosch Distance +) two or 15,000 miles, and Amsoil's best will do three or 25,000 miles. It is a deal of getting what you pay for, and saving money.

But my comments apply to canister filters. Cartridge filters may be the same, I don't know.

My filters mount side ways and I've never had an issue with filling it up and mounting it. If you spin it on quickly enough you won't spill anything. That's with Amsoil XL 5w30.
 
I just crank the diesels for 20-30 seconds without allowing the glow plugs time to heat up-although on a gas engine I would have to pull the fuel pump relay or ignition to get that effect.

On most average sized filters it's more like 8 oz ... I've measured how much it takes to fill them up on a few filters.

On sideways mounted filters, you can at least put enough oil in them and rotate them by hand to saturate all of the media, which will help some on dry start-up. I see the oil light go out ~1 to 1.5 sec faster when I just saturate the media alone.
 
ok so i've decided to test all this out for myself. the focus has synpower in it right now. i will take a used oil analysis of that at my next oil change. i will put inQuaker State Ultimate Durability and an extended interval filter. after 7500 miles (a normal OCI) i will drain theQuaker State Ultimate Durability and fill with another batch of Quaker State Ultimate Durability. i will leave the filter on. i will get a used oil analysis of this sample, and a final used oil analysis from the next OCI.

this should tell me 2 things: howQuaker State Ultimate Durability compares to synpower, and how wear particles compare between 7500 miles on a filter or 15000 miles on the same filter.

On my Honda S2000 the stock oil filter takes about 3/4 of a qt. to fill and my oversize Baldwin takes 1 3/4 qt's of oil to fill. I use 6 qt's. of oil when I do a filter and oil change instead of 5 qt's with the Honda filter.

OH, I gotchya! The other filters in his thread aren't the same size as the P1 you linked to either, can is wider than the gasket. I know I was always surprised at how much oil would go into the 51040 when I would pre-fill it.

Your math is off or I have magic oil filters. My '06 S2000 takes 5.1 qt's of oil when I also change the "stock" Honda oil filter(which I don't use now) and I put 6 qt's in with the Baldwin B7042 oil filter and the oil is not up to full(one mark below full) on the dip stick even with 6 qt's of oil.
To my knowledge the stock Honda oil filter for the S2000 is the biggest oil filter that Honda put on any of its cars. It's way bigger than my sons '09 Civic Honda oil filter. The Honda oil filter for the S2000 is made "only" for the S2000 and does not show any other model of Honda that it will fit.

The math is right. A can that is 3-11/16" dia x 5-3/8" long has a volume of 57.4 cu-in (~ 1 qt); and that's assuming there is nothing inside the can such as media, center tube, ADBV, etc that will reduce the volume. 1 qt = 57.75 cubic inches in volume.

Next time you change the oil & filter, use an accurate graduated measuring cup or similar (in ounces) and fill the actual filter with oil to see how much it holds.

It may be that the dipstick in your car is not very calibrated. I've seen dipsticks that are not always 1 qt between the low and high marks on the dipstick.
