My GTI is due for an oil change & today my frugal-ness got the best of me. Even though I always sing the praises of Mobil 1 oil filters, I couldn't resist the Advance Auto Parts sale on Purolator Pure One oil filters. They are only $3.88 after $1.50 mail-in-rebate, good until 5/25. I hope my little VW turbo doesn't get

at me for my decision to switch from M1.

I suppose you want absolution and/or dispensation from your peers for this act of selfish fugalness?? No way!!

Don't feel bad. You still have the silicone ADBV amd "sythetic" media. Plus you're getting better filtering, and more effective area. Why be worried?

AFAIK Pure 1 filters are very well constructed and very efficient. The limitation "might" be in dirt holding capacity over an M1 or Amsoil filter. With shorter drains on the turbo, it might be a cost effective solution and change it every time. The Pure 1 might not be the better choice for those that extend drains.

Why would the Pure one have less dirt capacity. Although I have not cut apart a M1, it apears that Purolator usually uses more media then anyone.

PureOne is a fantastic filter ..probably only topped by M1 and surely on par with Napa Gold (if NG is even as good). Since virtually no one does extended drains ..holding cap is, for many, a moot point.

I don't think M1 is $4-5 better than PureOne...but it is probably the finest commonly available filter out there.

FWIW, I received my $1.50 rebate today, for the Pure One filter I referred to in the first post in this thread. I purchased the filter on 5-17-05.

Today (8-1-05) is 9-1/2 weeks later. I had given up receiving this rebate, but in the end, Advance Auto Parts & Purolator didn't let me down.

Stamp, 37 Cents
Envelope, 5 Cents
Time used, 30 mins
Getting $1.50 from your beloved oil filter company, priceless.

Yep; It may not amount to a drop in the financial bucket, but I loves me a rebate, umm-huh!!!

Most rebate offers bet on a feel good price when you make the purchase, and then too lazy to cash it in. I bet they have a cost/benefit calulation, with a probability model of what % of people actually bother to send it in. They probably caluclated they will make more profit from the increased sales before they make such offer. I try to turn in all the rebate forms I can to mess with their model. Or was I in their % to begin with? Hmmm...

Exactly. They know most will buy it on impulse and will never fill out and mail the forms. I used to be hit and miss, but lately I have been 100%.

Wayne, I'm guessing your'e a little bit younger than me but I remember when a sale was a sale and the price was discounted right then and there. These rebates are as the gentlemen before me have stated a come on to get you to buy the product and then hope you forget to or are too lazy to mail in the rebate in which case the product maker wins. I don't buy products that say rebate only ones that are on sale. This old dog doesn't want to learn this new trick.

I once read that only 1/4 of the people actually go through the trouble of collecting their rebate.

I think Johnny nailed it.... feel-good price to lure them in, too lazy to send in the rebate.

WavinWayne,

Didn't you install a Mobil 1 oil filter on your VW a few weeks ago ???

Was the rebate from Purolator or AdvanceAuto rebate ?

Yes, I am currently running an oversized Mobil 1 M1-301 oil filter on my '00 VW GTI 1.8T.

Honestly, I'm not sure exactly who the rebate for the Pure One filter is from. The rebate check simply states:

Rebate Center

Advance Auto & Purolator Thank You For Your Purchase.

The name of the bank printed on the check is:
STEARNS BANK
N.A., AZ
SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85260

I have not yet used the Pure One. It will be my next filter.
