Wow, I joined this forum last night and am still not done searching! So far I haven't found a clear answer to my question, so I'll go ahead and ask it...

My '02 Accord sees Autocross duty 2-4 times a month. Right now, it sees 5k OCIs with 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic, and Honda's blue Filtech filters.

My question to you all: should I continue using the Honda Filtech filters for 5k OCIs, or should I move to a "better" filter?

What if I start using 2oz of Auto-RX at every oil change? This would be after the clean/rinse cycle using dino oil and cheaper filters. I'd go back to Mobil 1 and my "long term" filters after that cycle is over...

For "normal" conditions they say to change the oil every 7.5k miles, and the filter every 15k miles.

For "severe" they say to change the oil+filters every 3.75k miles/6 months. I'd say I'm a little above "severe" when it comes to maintenance schedules.

I'm doing it every 5k miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic, which comes out to roughly 4-5 months. I'm just curious as to whether or not I should be using a better filter for the longer OCIs.

I still have one more Honda-Filtech AO1 filter left before I plan on ordering another batch...

if you are going to compramise between the normal the severe oil change interval by doing it every 5K instead of 3.75K, then how about a compramise with the filter as well?
change it every 10K, or every other oil change.

doesnt really matter what brand you use as long as it is speced for youre engine.ni use supertech on my honda, becuase its the cheapest.

I think what you are doing now is just fine.

You are going pretty hard on the car 2-4 times per month, or up to once a week. That is fairly severe service, autocross is surely increasing oil temp far more than Grandma driving across town.

The Honda Filtech is a great filter. Keep using those. Plus you can sometimes get a deal, my dealer sells them for $4.00 each if you buy 4 or more. Not bad for the quality.

I'm not wild about changing the filter every other change. I mean, you are already under the car with your handy drain pan. Spring for the extra $4 and virtually no extra time and mess.

Keep going with that and the M1 every 5k, I don't see how you can go wrong. Sure you could push it out but with the hard use why chance it when you can do your own oil changes with this combo for $25.

I think I'd change the oil to Amsoil XL 5w-20 before changing the filter. Filter is fine, but you can probably get a Wix cheaper.

Good, I guess I'm fine. Next time I need new filters I'll just buy more of the A01 Filtechs...

However, I've found a really good deal on a large amount of the older, larger Nippon POH-305 Honda filters (crush washers included).

After shipping, the cost per Nippon filter+washer comes out to $2 less than my cheapest source for Filtech A01 filters+washers (HandAaccessories.com, none on eBay).

How would you compare the Filtech A01 to the older Nippons POH-305? Would I really see a slight drop in oil pressure moving to the larger filter? I guess I will see a small gain in oil capacity and filtration capacity...
