Oil consuption after synthetic

I tried Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in my van a few years ago, and it burnt a little. I switched over to AFE 0W30, with no consumption. Now I'm using Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 with no consumption.

Try a High Mileage full synthetic to help condition all those old rubber seals. I just did this in the 05 Matrix which had seen a lot of MC syn-blend oil. Now just switched to Valvoline Full synthetic with MaxLife. I'd want to run one full oci of High Mileage oil before making the switch.

If it was a qt low at time of oil change, I'm not sure I'd be worried. I mean, the oil was going to be removed anyway; now you have one less quart to return.

I get that more oil in the sump means lower temps, especially if it's a low capacity sump; but unless if you are towing/racing/driving hard, does it really matter? I presume "min" means minimum level to operate under the conditions it was designed for, so it may well be fine to drive hard even being a quart low--not sure I'd test that theory, but on a gently driven daily driver, I don't see the worry about being a qt low at oil change time.

Since this holds 6 quarts I'm not sure it's that low. If it was less than 4qt then I'd be more concerned. And of course, driving around 1qt low leaves less reserve capacity in case something drastic developed overnight.

Stick with the synthetic for the next oil change and see if consumption stops. That's what happened when I switched my old civic to synthetic. Used a quart after a few thousand miles. Topped it off. After the next oil change, no more consumption. No idea what caused that but it stopped using oil after running on synthetic for the first 5k interval.

We don't know what the initial level was.
So it could easily been 1/4 or 1/2 qt low, cutting the real consumption in half or completely.
I switched from dino to synthetic (Mobil 1 0w-30) for one oci with no consumption.

Because this truck never used any drop of oil even with 5k on Mobil dyno. After switching to full syn, 4k miles later the oil is dropping to the minimum mark, I'm not used to see the oil at such low level.

cb13, you add BEFORE it gets below minimum. Minimum means minimum, not add below here.

Carguy21, some consumption when switching is normal, I've changed over several vehicles with that much mileage and all leaked a little or used a little. BUT the leakage/use went away within an OCI or two and they were tight after that. As mentioned above, give it some time.

Actually the owners manual of every vehicle I've owned has said not to add until below the min mark. It's even in bold print and all caps in the manual for my '12 F150.

Maybe it inverted to LTG.

Actually, you suppose to run PP for 3K, then change it then run 5K. Dyno has high NOACK and probably you have clogged PCV etc. PP now is doing what any synthetic oil is doing good: cleaning. I would dump that oil now, put Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 again and then monitor level. Do not be surprise if this goes on for some time. Also, check your PCV.
Just because your engine did not use dyno, does not mean it is better for engine. There is no substitution for full synthetic oil and regardless that Highlander is easy on oil, I would always run full synth.

what is the OCI strategy? how much are you extending by going to synthetic? what is the OP optimizing for?

if it used to the half way point at 4k miles it would get to the add line at 8k miles.

if the strategy is to oci at 7500miles you could change it at that point with no financial loss.

so still your oil change is extended double the conv. strategy with no additional oil cost.

There are dozens of identical posts about switching brands and getting oil consumption during the first cycle. 99.9% of the time it stopped during the 2nd cycle

I listen to a local automotive show and 4 automotive podcast often and this subject comes up on a regular basis and they all have said consistently that adding 1 qt of motor oil every 800 to 900 miles regardless if the engine is new or older is considered acceptable as an industry standard.
My wife's new Jeep Renegade has 4,800 miles and so far I have added a quart of oil.
Check your oil!

Maybe by manufacturers that want to pass their [censored] off onto the consumer....

Has any oil company ever advised that switching between Syn and Convl / vice versa may result in initial consumption? I have read this in various threads but wonder if it's ever been documented in a study.
