Oil Coking - turbo engines

Hey Everyone,

I feel guilty every time I don't cool down my engine after some spirited driving. I've done some research on the forum so I know new turbo engines don't really have any problems with oil coking anymore. I usually try to drive gently for 1 to 2 minutes before shutting the car off after driving aggressively.

Would 8-10 seconds of WOT be enough to get the turbo really hot? I'm asking because I consider that hard driving. I've been using Mobil 1 0W-40 which in theory should help.

I thought Mobil 1 0w40 (Visom base stock) has been shown to not be the best performer in preventing hot turbo coking. Maybe I'm wrong.

I always thought Castrol Edge 5w30 was the cat's meow for those worried about this issue.....
 
In your Hyundai I would not lose any sleep over it. It is engineered to not need a cool down period.

In my 07 VW I have never done any special shut down procedures due to the turbo.

That was more of an 80's thing.......

My car is speced for both 5w30 & 5W-40. Without getting into the thin vs thick debate I prefer to use a slightly heavier weight oil. It's Nissan GTR approved, meets MB-Approval 229.5, and PORSCHE A40.

Accord to XOM it's good for the following applications:

Latest engine technologies including Turbo-chargers, Direct Injection, Diesels (without DPF) and Hybrids
High performance engines
Most operating conditions, from mild to extreme

Diesel crowd might not agree...
 
Most modern turbos use coolant to cool the turbo - it is not as big of (if even at all) an issue any more. Also - most of the designs even allow for circulation after the engine shuts down.

Ford's ecoboost uses water cooling. Does Hyundai? You'd think that would be important, and the thermal siphoning in there after shutdown. Honeywell (formerly Garrett) GT15 water cooled turbos seem to be the modern way. Still, gets pretty hot in there. But Hyundai and Ford both spec Group II conventional oil, amazing.
 
Based on 10 years experience with VW/Audi 1.8T engines, I think that the following helps prevent coking:
1. Good quality synthetic like Castrol Syntec/Edge or Mobil1
2. Regular oil changes at 3K for mostly city driving or 5K for mostly highway driving
3. Good quality filter

I used exclusively 5W40 and 0W40 Castrol Syntec/Edge with good results in three different Audis for up to 120K miles.

Water cooling, and especially thermal siphoning techniques after shutdown, a thing on those VW/Audi turbos? Thats got to help but there is no getting around it can get very hot in those bearings.

Garrett Air Research was a great company. Honeybleep is like the black plague of company killing by merger. They almost croaked Fram.
 
Honeywell is not Honeywell since AlliedSignal bought it and kept the Honeywell name. Honeywell Aerospace was a great organization through the 80's-early 90's. AlliedSignal, to use a tired cliche, is why outer space is a vacuum.

I'm was referring to gasoline engines.
 
I have a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 that I purchased new. The only time I let it idle prior to shutdown is after a HPDE track session. From 5,000 miles to 69,000 miles I ran a 5,000 mile OCI using Mobil 1 5w30. At 69,000 miles I extended the OCI to 7,500 miles(still using Mobil 1 5w30) and at 115,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. The turbo was replaced at 26,600 pursuant to a TSB. The car now has almost 154,000 miles on the clock and the turbo is in fine shape.
