Oil change shop questions

Holy religious figure on a stick. The oil in my TDI is black as democrat sin in 500 miles. Yet is good for 10K. Color is the LAST thing I would use (unless the color was 'coffee with cream' in which case I would pitch a fit!) to gauge oil life/contamination.

(this is compounded by the fact that oils come out of the bottle different colors - does this mean that some new oil is pre-dirtied?)

tell your dad to go back and smack some people with a stick.

haha thank you everyone for the enlightening replies. As far as I know the car has been run on synthetic its entire life. I dont know the milage but If I had to guess I would say 60-80k. My dad likes this local fastlube place so I beleive he has always put Pennzoil Platinum in it save for maybe a few times he could have wandered into a different oil shop.

So here Is my new question. Nobody out in my local area is doing any specials on PP. So I was just thinking no biggie Ill just do what I always do. Pick up a pure1 at advance and snag 5quarts at wallys. One problem..... My dad "HATES" walmart. So what do we do? just foot the extra cost and get the PP at full price? Or get valvoline special? 27 dollars at advance right now.

I have always beleived that you should stick with a certian weight and brand of oil for at least 3 oil changes so I kinda dont want to but Im also a penny pincher. So what do you guys think?

But yes I wish my dad would let me change the oil all the time so I could keep a little better track of it. But lately its been harder and harder to find time to spend with my dad. So Im not sure how long he is going between OCI and stuff. I told him dont go much furter than 8 or 9. I usualy like pens platnum and a purolator pure one as my weapon of choice. So If I do the oil change ill get back to you. for the money i save him he could pick up a analasis kit and we could get to the nitty gritty.

Spend all the time with your dad you can you will be glad you did one day. I would give 10 years off of my life to spend 1 hour with dad again.

im not arguing for the flush here but color is important to me. when i first started taking care of my wife's car the Pennzoil conventional would be dark 1000 miles in and very dark at oil change time. after 3 ocis and 10k with PP the oil never gets dark and it looks very clean inside. right now she has 1k miles on FS and it still looks new on the stick.
color of the oil is a good indicator sometimes of the cleanliness of the internals.

back to the topic, regular use of PP is better than any flush!!

GO FOR IT! synpower is a great oil!

or just go to walmart yourself and buy the oil, you could give PU a shot this time

I believe oil turns black because of heat.

Maybe diesels run hotter is why they turn black faster (the higher compression).
