I don't understand why people want to do this. Dealer change is $25 for synthetic blend. Local mechanic $40 coupon in mailings every couple of months for full synthetic Pennzoil Platinum. I've seen similar in all locations I've lived in the last 15 years. I can't imagine it's going to be much cheaper than that. And they all use oil that's going to work just fine in any car.

Mine takes 8.5 quarts of oil and a cartridge filter. Usually those end up costing more so I bring my $2/quart Castrol and a filter I bought on Rockauto and they change the oil and rotate the tires for $20.

Jiffy Lube here charges $40.00 (labor) if you bring your own oil/filter. It would probably be about $80.00 (8 quarts oil/filter) for their Syn blend if one just uses their advertised services.

Dealer is far cheaper.......

Talking to self,,, do not make any comments about what 10 bucks will buy in Cookeville...

I DIY, but know that Iffy Lube will charge 29. in labor.

You can probably find a shop that will install customer-supplied parts but they might not give you a price break from what they would charge normally. To them, an oil change costs as much as an oil change, no matter who paid for the parts. I would not worry so much about them actually using my parts, but I would be concerned about the quality of their labor. (What is the torque spec for the drain plug? What about those greasy fingerprints on the hood and door jamb?) I don't think it's worth bothering... why not learn to change your own oil?

Many shops have a strict policy not to install customer-supplied parts, for many reasons... liability, opportunity cost, etc:

I bring my own oil to Pepboys and they charge around $24 or so, basically the same as a typical oil change. Why then? I bring synthetic and do it once every 10k, instead of using their dino and do it once every 5k.

Interesting because Jiffy Lube offers $24.99 semi syn oil changes on groupon all the time including oil and filter.
