Would it be OK to cycle between PYB and PU 5 w30 ? The PU for longer OCI'S ( 7500 -9000 miles ) and the PYB for shorter ones ( 5000 ) to insure a cleaner engine.

I'm thinking less and less of PU. You pay a premium for it over many other well made oils, but I don't think you get much more for your money. Personally, I don't think it's much more than a 5k oil. Then again, I don't run any oil past 5k

If you're a Pennzoil fan, why not just use PP all the time? find it on sale and stock up to keep the cost down...

To answer the question directly, no worries with your plan.

As I posted a few months back,I got some Ultra on sale @ Wally for 5 bucks a jug of 5-20 and 3 bucks a jug for 10-30.I have oil for 9 changes.I think Ultra is a fine oil. Before using it I thought people were dingy for saying they could tell a difference in their engine sound and response but I was wrong. It does sound quieter and smoother. It goes to show you that sometimes things do sound too good to be true so try it yourself and see.I am very impressed with Ultra but if it was not on sale I would not pay full price.

I thought through cycling OCI 's from longer ones with synthetics and back to shorter ones with conventional would be cost effective.

You don't say where in Texas, but since most is at 100 plus I would stay with syn and not be too brand conscience. Find a sale of whichever full syn, stock up and relax.

You are right about the heat. I live in Mesquite and am looking forward to the fall already.Back to oil,I never used synthetic before but now if I find a good sale of any name brand I will use it.I also will mix with dino if the grade on sale is not right.Over the years I have used just about everything and never had a oil related problem. Was brought up on 3000 mile oc but now I force myself to go 5000 miles.I get tired of looking at the same filter for 5000 miles so I get itchy for a change.Baby steps, baby steps!!!

I'm on the coast near Galveston, and right now I have seen a couple of days of 100 degrees and it looks like its going to hott for quite awhile. I have done mostly 5000 oil intervals with synthetics but b/c of this site believe I can get that out of conventional oils easily. I did try Amsoil 25,000 5w30 but felt it was too much of a stretch so chickened out at 12,500. No analysis but have concluded for peace of mind some shorter OCI's might help with cleaning after an extended run on oil.

As a side note I worked in an oil refinery for 32 years and saw the switch from conventional lubricants to synthetics and the effects longevity wise on rotating equipment by a factor of at least for. I imagine b/c of cost considerations for a barrel of synthetic oil many of the pumps received only filter change outs for extended periods or until a pump/compressor, etc. was changed out.

I think it might be a 5000 mile oil or it might be a 15000 mile oil depending on application.
