Oil Change Procedure Question

I normally intentionally underfill by a bit and then top it up after running and checking it.

My rationale? Just the way I saw it done when young. Monkey see...

Part of this is just based on usually using 4 litre jugs. One of my cars has a 4.5 litre sump and the other is between 6 and 7 litres.

On the one car i add 4 litres (including a couple of ounces in the upside down mounted filter) and then run it a bit. After it settles out I check the level and add.

On the other car I add a 4 litre jug and then eyeball in another half a jug or so, and then check the level. I can't really prefill that filter without dumping it when i spin it on.

In a previous vehicle with a 5 qt fill, It was easy to just dump it all in. On my newer 4 cyl vehicles, the capacities (with filter) are 4.5 and 4.75 qts. That makes it a little tougher so I fill with 4 qts, run the engine a bit, then top off. Easy and no harm done. I do like the idea of pre-filling or at least pre-wetting the filter, I'll try that next OCI. Unfortunately it is a little tougher on my Saturn with the verticle-mount cartridge.
