This might deserve a simple answer, but i'm interested to see what you experts think. I just changed the oil on my 97 tacoma 4x4. I drained the oil, replaced the drain plug, then went to take off the oil filter and i couldn't get it off. Walked to the store and bougth 2 different filter wrenches, neither worked. Had to get to work so i left the old filter on the truck and filled the oil with new Valvoline Conventional 5w30 oil. Drove about 25 miles and got back home today and tried another oil filter wrench and finally got the thing off. I replaced the oil filter with a new Toyota OEM filter. Here's my question, should i cut the change interval down because i ran an old filter for a few miles? The filter i changed out was a cheap no name type called "pro guard". I was going to run the oil 3000 miles, safe to do, or cut it down?

Its safe, you would have been alright if you had left the old filter on for another 3000 miles.
Definitely good for a 3000 mile OCI. Nothing to worry about.
Some people change their oil at 5k miles and leave the filter for another 5k - don't sweat it one bit.
You're perfectly fine, most manufacturers recommend to change the oil filter every other change anyways.
Thanks guys. I've always bought a new filter with every change. I guess i'm one of those anal guys who maintains his vehicle better than most. Sad thing is i'll be selling this truck in another 3 years so the next owner will get a good vehicle. Oh well, as long as it runs well for me. Thanks again guys. Don't put the new filter on so tight this time ...
Basically mixed a filters worth of old oil into the new. If the filter is 10 percent of your crankcase capacity and you do 5000 mile OCIs, then it's like you already went 500 miles. Not a problem. You'll be fine.
Actually, i just bought this truck and it was my first oil change. I always just hand tighten my oil filters on. Anyways, thanks for all the info guys.
I tighten my filters pretty much as tight as I can get them on by hand. I never tighten with an oil filter wrench. The only time I have a hard time getting the filter off is with a new car. Of course those tiny filters they sell now are a real problem since the don't make an old fashioned oil filter wrench for the (that I have seen so far), so I have to use a strap type wrench and they don't work very well.

If you have the room, a screwdriver punched through the core works better than any wrench I've seen.
I like to use my adjustable plier style wrench for getting filters off, if I ever need to. I also just tighten them as hard as I can by hand and I usually have no trouble getting them back off
That's the truth if they are stuck.
But, the oil filters aren't even supposed to be that tight, anwyays. Just put a little oil around the rubber seal and snug it up a little. Nothing too loose, but nothing too tight, either.
I don't even have an oil filter wrench. I change the oil in all my family's cars. The first time I changed it for all of them, I had to put a screwdriver through the filter. After I do them, I have no problem taking the filters off by hand, and have never in my life had a problem with a filter leaking because I didn't put it on tight enough, or for any reason, really.
I tightened a Wix 51393 equivalent on a VW 2.0 AVH engine as tight as I could get it, which was about one full turn. 7000 miles later, the pliers type filter wrench used to remove it required someone to crush the can slightly in order to get enough leverage for removal. Gasket was lubed. Dunno what happened...I couldn't have possibly tightened it more than one full turn.
