The little engines are tough on oil.

I put a vibration hour meter on the dash, just to the lower left of the radio display, sitting on the shelf.

At 200 hours, or 7500 miles, whichever comes first, change oil and oil filter. Every second change or 500 hours, your choice, change air filter.

Note that you can run an oversized oil filter.

Original Equipment is Fram 6607, Purolator 14612

Oversized is Fram 7317, Purolator 14610...

Hangs a little lower, but frame will scrape first before filter...

and a frankenbrew...
Half a five quart jug of Mobil 1 5W-40 or 0W-40, and a quart of really good synthetic 5W-30, Penn Ultra, Castrol Edge, or similar...
The 40 weight is a little thick, the Ladybug runs better when the blood (oil) is just a touch thinner...

With MB 229.5 oil, I'd say you're okay to go the 10k. Also, if you have any doubts, you could drain some out at, say 7500,and do an oil analysis and then you'd know for sure.

If you want a heavy XXw30, why not use GC?

Anyway, GC might work here too, but you would have to see what Benz specifications your car takes.

10k OCI is doable with M1 0W40, but I like to have a little margin and doing OCI twice a year, Fall and Spring, is easier to remember.

Over 10 years period, you will do 15 OCI's with 10k or 20 OCI's with twice a year OCI. 5 extra OCI over 10 years costs about $150 or $15 a year or $1.25 a month, that is the cost of 1 coffee.

Congrats on the new smart. One thing to keep in mind is that the maintenance schedule (including the "oil service plus" concept) and most fluid specifications for the smart are intentionally aligned with those of MBUSA vehicles, rather than having been specifically chosen for this unique application. As you noted, the engine is a Mitsubishi (3B21 originally designed for a "kei car" application , not the new Mirage power plant).

The UOAs that I've personally seen all fell within the 5,000-7,500 mile range and have generally all looked good (even, not surprisingly, oils not on the 229.5 list).

The Smart Fortwo engine is not a Kei car engine, because Kei cars are not allowed more than 660cc of displacement. The US-spec Smart Fortwo uses a 1.0L engine. It isn't the same as a Mirage engine either, because the Mirage engine is 1.2L.

I didn't state it was a kei car engine, I stated it was originally designed for a kei car application, where it displaced 659cc unit via a 65.4 bore and 65.4 mm stroke. This configuration was designated the 3B20 (or 3B20T in turbocharged form).

In the 999cc, normally aspirated form that was later supplied for the fortwo, it is designated 3B21. This larger version originally powered the "i" Concept car, which would later evolve into the production Mitsubishi i kei car featuring the smaller 3B20 versions.
