Oil change for 2014 BMW 328d

I am looking to change the oil on my car and I am having a bit of trouble locating what I need. I am in Germany with the military and they don't cover maintenance like they do in the states... The manual shows that it need BMW Long Life 04 oil which looks like that's some 5w30 oil if I am not mistaken, if someone could please confirm that. Also can anyone help me figure out what filter I need? I have never had a diesel before, is the filter any different than a regular gasser?

Yes, you should stick with an oil meeting LL-04 spec.

As for the filter, Mann's catalog shows their HU 6004 x as a replacement. I'm sure there are many others...
 
Europe has a lot of good choices for LL04 oils compared to the United States. OVERKILL's recommendation is a good one.
 
Any oil meeting BMW LL-04 is suitable. There are four viscosity grades that can meet LL-04:

0W-30
0W-40
5w30
5W-40

The most commonly used are 0w30 and 5w30, but choice of viscosity is up to you and all are suitable for use. You should be able to find a selection of oils meeting LL-04.

Is this the US Spec 328d (aka 320d)? If so how do you like
 
I paid 47K flat, no taxes for the 328d xdrive with cold weather, driver assistance, driver assistance plus, lighting, premium, and technology packages. I am loving it. It is a US spec car and includes shipping back to the states. I have to pay some import fees however. It has the additive for the catalytic converter or whatever to make the exhaust more green or something...

This is my first BMW, and I LOVE IT! I am a truck guy and sold my Silverado when I got shipped here. I have never really liked driving cars, due to my love to trucks and for the fact that I am a tall guy, but this is a great car. Obviously not as much power as the 328i, but I am not out drag racing!

How is the performance, MPG?

Maybe a dumb question here, but I don't know the difference in viscosities and applications for them. What does the LL-04 signify?

Good question. I am a little lead footed so I don't ever seem to get close to what they claim. I get 36 mpg city and 35 highway, but you have to remember I am driving on the Autobahn typically running 110mph. It's just so hard to go 75 when everyone is going faster and when you can really open it up. I have seen when I go on stretches of road doing 60 mph the computer says I am getting 45-50mpg.

Yeah, I spent a lot of my life on Autobahn, I know what you talking about. 36mpg on Autobahn is actually good number.

I'll let someone more adept at it explain viscosity, but LL-04 simply denotes Longlife-04: the current BMW motor oil standard for their non-M engines. It is designed to complement the emissions systems in BMW's gas and diesel motors. The only caveat about LL-04 is that BMW does not approve the use of LL-04 in spark ignition(gas) engines outside of Europe- but of course that is not applicable to your car.

Thanks that helps. I am just going to go see what the store on post(post exchange) has and that's basically what I will buy. If I buy on the German economy oil prices are too high. So looking at the huge list of acceptable oils is a little overwhelming. Since I am uneducated on the matter its like, holy [censored]! Which is best for me?!?
 
I use Mobil 1 products almost exclusively, but I'll readily admit that there are other good oils out there; I would just make certain that whatever oil you buy is LL-04 approved. If it says something like "meets or exceeds the standards of BMW LL-04" it may in fact meet the standards, but BMW has not actually approved it- and that could mean trouble with a warranty claim.
By the way, you might want to check out the BMW Car Club of America.

There really isn't any which are "best". In the US we're limited to Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 and dealer Castrol Edge OE 5w30 are the most readily available. There's Lubro-Moly, Pentosin, Shell, etc which have to be mail ordered. The dealer oil is usually the cheapest when you're not looking for sales.

LL-04 is a proprietary BMW oil spec. It's baselined on ACEA C3, and then there are additional BMW-specific tests performed on N20 and N42 engines. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find what these specific wear tests entail. But judging by the Lubrizol performance spider charts, the LL-04 spec exceeds ACEA C3 requirements when it comes to wear, piston deposits, and oxidative thickening.
