Oil burning but nothing on plugs

The trooper we bought last February uses oil. Common problem with these as the drain back holes behind the oil rings are too small. They get plugged up and the oil can't drain through them so it gets burned in the cylinders.

It's usage seems to have settled @ about 250 miles per qt of 10w30.

I'm doing a B12 soak tonight so I pulled all 6 plugs.

I was expecting to see ash deposits on the plugs or at least some sort of deposits on the worst offending cylinder.

The NGK double platinum plugs I pulled out of it look brand new! No sign of oil on any of them. According to the records they have been in the engine about 18000 miles.

Long enough to have fouled me thinks.

Anyway in the morning I will drain the oil,put the plugs back in and put Valvoline restore and protect 5w30 in it to hopefully help clean things up.

It is burning 1 quart of oil every 250 miles, so that is about 20 quart of oil if you change every 5k miles? That is high even for that engine.

There are a couple reasons why it might be that you did not see what one would expect. First one comes to mind is most modern synthetics burn much cleaner with lower residue than older ones. Also those platinium plugs stay really hot through the usage, likely burning of everything asap. Though sometimes oil ash leaves bone white colour residue behind (unlike fuel`s dark residue). Also if the oil atomizes rather than leaking past, it can cause a clean burn

Oof, no point doing oil changes with that kind of consumption, just replace the filter every so often.

Hope the piston soak and Valvoline Restore and Protect can work their magic and solve that, best of luck.
that vehicle takes 4-6 quarts of oil. Literally all the oil would be replaced in 1-1.5k miles. I would also not use expensive oil if this was mine.

I am hopeful that Valvoline Restore and Protect will alliviate the situation, at least to a degree

What's odd is that he thing sounds great and runs well. Even passed the California emissions test where they put the car on rollers and run it,

I would suggest doing the soak over multiple days if the consumption is that bad. B12 is pretty cheap (or at least it was). My Camry was burning a quart every 350 miles. A five day, five can soak took her down to a quart every 3000 miles. B12 in each cylinder, half a dozen manual rotations, soak for 8 hours, repeat.

I wish I had that much time. Been wanting to do this soak and this weekend was the first chance I got. She needs it for school Monday and in case of an emergency she needs the car drivable.

just a dumb question, are you sure its burning oil and not leaking out somewhere? or blowing out when driving. How does your exhaust pipe at the end look, clean or sooty, & wet, are engine temps up to a decent level, injectors clean?, clean air filter? PVC valve?
