oil buring problem

so i have this old 1999 subaru impreza outback sport beater with 250,000+ miles on it that i let my friend drive around and it is starting to burn oil, it does 5,000 mile oci's with maxlife and and at around 3,000 the oil has gone down about 3/4 of the way between the full and add mark. it is driven around 400-500 miles a week. i added some rislone stop smoke recently and noticed the engine runs smoother. the owners manual recommends 5w30, would it be recommended to switch to a thicker viscosity? if so which weight?

i have been impressed with the Pennzoil High Mileage in my sons saturn. It uses less oil than with maxlife.

3000+ miles to a qt is not a problem!

This oil consumption is pretty good for a quarter million miles! I hope my cars are so lucky.

Try different High Mileage oils(penn, QS, Kendall) and see if comsumption slows down if not try T5 10w30,
maybe your friend is driving the car harder causing more blow by?

So this car has done 250K, and you are worried about 3/4 of a quart after 3K?
Please!
This engine has done really well.
Add the little bit of oil, and check back here when it hits 300K.

sorry for my ignorance about this, i have never owned a car that burned oil before, yet i have never owned a car with more than 100,000 miles on it before this one so i wouldn't know, however would it hurt to switch to 10w30 to stop the consumption all together? i would prefer to stick with maxlife because it has given me great results and it is a syn blend.

The car in my sig is my daily driver and doesn't burn any oil in its 5k+ OCI so its ok to want to try and find a way to stop consumption.

Try 10w30 and see what happens.
