I was wondering if the oil that Name brand quick oils put in, is the same oil you buy, just in bulk or a cheaper third grade stuff, not even avaiable to the public. I think I read on here about Mobil wanting extra for Mobil 5000, when that is their cheapest oil in stores. We get our company trucks oil changed at Texeco quick lubes and I noticed on the bill that it says Havoline T36 oil 10w30. I took for granted they used Havoline Deposit shield, now Iam not so sure. I know alot of Dealerships get their oil from Carquest or Napa bulk by the drum and then just tell you its Valvoline. Which it is ,Sort of. Anybody know what the story is.

According to industry insiders (and the entire reason for PQIA to exist in the first place), bulk oil supplies today, even of quality brands, have some pretty serious QC problems compared to consumer bottles.

At my VIOC location we use the exact same oils that you buy off the shelf (Valvoline Premium Conventional, Durablend, Maxlife, Synpower, Maxlife Full Synthetic, Premium Blue, and Premium Blue Extreme), I cannot speak for other chains of quick-lube.
If it was one of those 'family owned' quick lubes ,I'd worry.VIOC,Q/S or other name brand places that you can see the drums, probably OK.If you must take it to a lube shop (like when I broke my arm)you may also bring your own oil(sealed jugs of course).Ask in advance though.

I have done that before and they still charged $30 for labor.
On a brighter note I once had my oil changed at a lube joint for $20 cash only. The manager was out for the day and I am pretty sure they guys were splitting all the $$ made.

I go to pep boys down the block, they always use bottled oil.

A lot of quick lubes do use recycled oil like oil changers, and some other shop that want the cheapest oil available. But just because it comes out of a gun doesn't mean its not the same. At my shop we have two 300 gallon tanks of castrol gtx,one 200 gallon tank of 5w30 high mileage. And other weight of gtx, why? Because imagined if we tried to store 300 gallons worth of quarts. We would need a warehouse next to the shop to store all that oil. We do carry bottled oil too but just because its not very high in demand.

Jiffy Lube is owned by Pennzoil. Do you really think their shops would use some unknown recycled oil? Say what you will about JL, but I think Pennzoil would protect their reputation.

I've never heard of an "unknown recycled oil" being used at a quick lube in these parts. But I do know one local chain was forced out of business via lawsuits from a major international oil company and from the NYS Attorney General (Eliot Spitzer at the time, LOL) for false advertising. A major name brand oil "sponsor," because they found he was using two sets of books, pulled their product and advert money. He just left the signs up while using a locally produced oil that might or might not have met the spec's of the day (Superior Lubricants?-SJ I think) and was blown in by disgruntled employees...

They call it "bulk oil" for a reason - they get it in "bulk" likely at a cheaper cost - since they can ship it in a big drum, rather than 200+ "quarts" of oil.
Odd though that they charge the same whether you get the "bulk" or the bottled oil; at Walmart anyways. You;d think you'd get a deal for getting the "bulk" stuff.
And yes, I've read the "bulk" oil is recycled oil, but ALL oil has traces of "recycled" oil in it - you think they use all of our oil we drop off at the collection sites for heating purposes?

Forget about a dinky drum, we get our Castrol GTX in bulk. We have over 6000 liters of 5w30 stored in our underground tank.
