Does anyone have a simple chart which lists the purpose of the additives found in motor oil ? (i.e. Moly = anti-wear lubricant , Boron = , Sodium = , etc.) I'm mainly interested in which additives are for wear protection and which additives are for cleansing ? Thank you in advance ...

Click on that "Bob is the oil guy" link in the top left corner of this page, then click on the "Oil Analysis" link in the left column.
-(Does anyone know how to do web research or do folks just find things by accident?)-

ARCOgraphite - Thanks for a more clear search path.
** I tried the search function box first and very little came up under : "Oil Additives" so I decided to leave a post .

Geez. Give the guy a break.

The Lubrication design link on the home page may give the OP a better answer-

Or this link to Blackstone -

Click on the GAS/Diesel report, then move your mouse over the element names for brief description.

I suspect many of the members haven't ever seen the BITOG home page, they probably have a link saved directly to the forums

While the Lubrication Design link was better than what ARCOgraphite suggested - it still doesn't answer my questions . The Blackstone report is better - but still doesn't tell me which of the additives is for cleaning and which is for wear protection ? ** My ultimate purpose is to compare ingredients in motor oils side - by - side to better evaluate those that may be better at cleaning versus those that may favor wear protection or friction modifiers more .

When you mouse-over the elements in the [censored] link, it says whether the element in question is a wear metal, contaminant, or oil additive, and if an additive, whether a detergent, dispersant, or anti-wear.

The only things I have to add to the [censored] descriptions are that Ti is being used now as an anti-wear additive, and that Na is sometimes used as an additive as well (though I don't remember its purpose).

Many additives, such as viscosity index improvers and friction modifiers, don't show up in a used oil analysis.

NateDN10 - Thanks , I didn't know the additive titles from Blackstone were "active" ...much better now !
