Hey Everyone,

I'm new here and let me say thank you to the BITOL community, lots of good info here.

I spent hours last night searching, reading, researching and I'm overwhelmed with the different products, etc.

My situation is that I have an 87 S10 with a mild 307 in it (H/C). I bought the truck as is, just put money in the body to make it look good. It does start right up and run, no miss fires (yet) BUT the problem I'm having is quite a bit of smoke while it's running, it does clear up some as it warms up (not nearly all the way though). I'm not sure if it's rings, or O rings... And to be honest, I don't want to touch the motor until it fails or this winter (I'm putting together an LT1 for the truck).

I'm looking for some advice on suggestions for products that may help the smoking. It wouldn't bother me if it were on a little bit, but the smoke would almost be a hazard for other people on the road. I should also note that this truck isn't going to be driven much... Maybe 2500 - 3000 miles a year.

Thanks in advance-

Chris

How many miles on the engine? It could the the rings or the valve stem seals letting the oil get by. Try doing an oil change with some 10w30 Valvoline Maxlife high mileage oil. That sometimes will slow down the valve stem seal leaks.

Lots of buildup/carbon in it from sitting. Maybe try Seafoam through a brake-booster line to decarbonize the engine and push all the crud out. It will smoke like a you know what for the duration of the process until it no more build up is present. Will smoke for a day or two after(light puffs) and should clear up. Specially an older car with low miles.

If it really did sit with a few short start-ups between sitting spells it could be stuck oil control rings. This is one case where the proverbial "Italian tuneup" (running it HARD on the highway for a while- of course with a crankcase full of clean high-quality detergent oil) might significantly reduce oil consumption.

Or it might not. But its a cheap/easy thing to try.

If that doesn't work, you might significantly reduce smoke by going to a 20w50 grade synthetic (like Mobil 1 20w50). The thicker oil might reduce consumption (or might not- depends on the engine), and its been my experience that synthetic oils tend to produce less visible smoke even if they're being burned at the same rate as conventionals.

I have a 305 Chevy that did this, I ended up replacing the valve seals, and then started using MMO in the fuel and oil, and no more smoking on startup, my thought is why not keep the fuel system lubed, and MMO will clean up your valve guides, how do the spark plugs look.

As the motor is smoking and you say you will be swapping it out later it wont hurt to try something really powerful.
Get some Kreen from Kano Labs,if there is anything stuck this stuff with free it up in short order.

I am running it in 2 vehicles right now with excellent results,16oz in the oil and 16 oz in the tank and drive it normally.
If you try this would you post your results as not many are available? From what i can see this might be ideal candidate for this product.

If you are looking for fast results, Kreen looks like it is the product to use.

I agree with Johnny... Do a OCI with Maxlife semi syn 10W30, it did wonders for my son's 99 Olds Aurora with the Northstar engine. Slowed down the leaks and oil burning with just one OCI.

I have read that it also does wonders for valve stem seals so you have nothing to loose. Spend the $15 for 5 quarts at Walmart and see how it goes for at least the first 1K miles. Good luck.
