I switched over because I had to have my transmission rebuilt and they didn't have any Z-1 and I wanted to try the new Honda fluid in it. I had to fill it with something, and I wanted to use OEM fluid this time since Amsoil didn't help it from going out. It had Amsoil ATF in it for 60k before it went out and I changed it every 20k with 3x drain and fills each time.

amsoil fluid can only do so much! i believe the pattern failures (in the odyssey) point to inherited problems set in motion when the vehicle rolled off the assembly line. i would be thankful for over 100k on a second gen oddy trans. i also believe that dw-1 is a great choice for your rebuild!

I don't believe the Amsoil was the cause of the failure. It was the awful design of the AT. But, since it was in the AT when it failed, I didn't feel comfortable putting the Amsoil back in it. I also no longer use any Amsoil products. Not because of this failure, but because of the pyramid scheme operation and that I have to pay them just to buy their products at what should be the retail price. There are plenty of other products that are just as good as Amsoil for less money.

I just did a 4X drain and fill with DW-1 in my wife's 04 Odyssey over the course of 1000 miles and a few weeks time. I also replaced the AT Filter ... first time after 148K miles. The van seems to shift much smoother now; it was very noticeable even after the 1st D&F. So I don't know whether it's due to the DW-1 or the new filter ... perhaps both.

I know in my case specific to the Odyssey, it has nothing to do with the actual shift firmness, it's got to do with reducing the erratic behavior this trans had. Constantly fluttering in/out of lockup, or going in/out of 5th during certain situations.

Switching to Valvoline Maxlife ATF in my 2008 Odyssey LX eliminated this behavior.

I think this is where a lot of these Ody/Honda Z1 threads go astray. Members chime in, in regards to their 4cyl AT Civic, Accord, and CRV, which is totally fine! It's just a complete different situation.

Anyone have experience with one of the "sealed" Odyssy transmissions? I like to change the fluid - but the manual says not to. Can you just do a fluid exchange and replace with synthetic Honda compatible fluid? Which fluid do you recommend? Thanks.

I wasn't aware that there were any sealed Honda transmissions. Is this something exclusive to the new 6-speed automatic?

That certainly is not true, my buddy Hondaman did a service on his 05.

There is a dipstick and a fill plug. Look beneath the intake duct...there's a 19mm fill plug and a drain plug that requires a 3/8" ext to remove.

Fluid changes are required when the Maintenance Minder displays code 3...which is 30-45k usually.

Your talking about a 2005 US built and sold Honda Odyssey? Who told you this?

If so, like Critic says. This is a very serviceable transmission. There's a dipstick, an easily accessible top mounted fill plug and a drain plug underneath.

I've drained/filled the trans on my 2008 Odyssey LX several times. 2005-2010 are the same series. The transmissions are different on the 2007+, but the same serviceability as the 2005-2006.

They're as easy to drain/fill as the engine oil.

1995 Honda Accord 217,000 miles. I've always used ZF in it, yesterday I put DW in it because I ran out of ZF. Can't tell any difference, this car is only driven 8,000-9,000 miles per year so it takes forever to cycle something through. Because it's so old and because I see metal paste on the magnet every change and have for over 100,000 miles, now I just change the transmission fluid every oil change. I've been doing this for 90,000 miles, it only takes 2.5 quarts (must not all come out), takes 10 minutes. For perspective, I just changed the oil and transmission fluid yesterday after 3000 miles, 3000 miles ago was last August! So it's only getting changed 3X per year. I use Walmart synthetic oil and the car doesn't burn oil. All that's been changed:

CV axles
Rear brakes (once)
Front brakes (twice)
Timing belts
Shocks (once)
radiator (once)
Air bag computer (ebay)
Valve cover gasket (over and over)
I did a valve adjustment (every 100,000)
Distributor o ring (leaking)
some water hoses
Muffler and mid pipe
Radiator fan

Plugs, fluids, thermostat, filters, etc.

All the suspension other than the shocks is original and tight. The wheel bearings are original. Original engine and transmission. The AC is not right and probably never will work properly.

It's been a [censored] of a car, my father bought it new in 1994 and was going to trade it in in 2006 with 129,000 miles on it (I know the mileage doesn't add up, I used to drive 40,000 miles per year when I first got the car). I offered to buy it instead.
