Odd FB experience from unknown contact

I had a car for sale of FB marketplace and did the proper thing by ending the listing the night of the title transfer. Also the prior night the for sale signs were pulled and the car was moved away from the road.

Here is the issue......I do not provide FB with my cell number. Maybe it figured it out on its own thru the app but I did not enter into my preferences nor have I typed it in any FB messages.

Today I get a call and a text saying, " Did you sell the car"

"If you did then take the number off of it if you dont want calls. RUDE."

This frankly struck a nerve with me. Enough I may never sell on FB again. How did this person obtain my cell#?

Was the cell number on the sign? Maybe someone wrote it down and didn't get around to calling until later?

I always sell on Facebook, and I never had any issues...

It is odd. However how do you know there two hours away? If its via their cell phone number, mine would tell you I am in a completely different state, and have been for 15 years.

I have never entered or shared my cell number on FB. Back in 2020 I heard a rumor the the app can access your device info and auto load it. I have spent 30minutes now and cant find it listed anywhere on my account,.

Did they specifically reference facebook? Maybe they just saw the sign and are mad about life?

Its possible that the caller may have called you *through* Facebook. My boss accidentally that that once when trying to message me on Messenger.

Doesn't explain how they were able to call after you took down the listing, but I wanted to put this out as a possibility.

Really means nothing for a cell phone nowadays. My son is in Germany and has a VA area code.

Did you have car pictures in the add with the “For Sale” sign visible? That’s how they could’ve gotten you phone number.

Never knew there was any such thing until my BIL buttdialed my cell one night.

I’d brush it off. Rude people will always exist.

But it’s another reason why I don’t plan on getting on FB anytime soon.

Common enough. We had a car with a FS sign on it in Boston and got several calls from seemingly remote #’s.

One caller was about 40 miles away and was referred by someone else. The second had a NH number, ditto.

Facebook goes out of their way not to let people include their phone numbers in Marketplace listings. The only way to get away with it is spell it out or include it in a photo, otherwise you just see [hidden information] or something like that.

Don't worry about it. There are always butthurt people who are upset that "their" car was "sold out from under them." They were "going to buy it Friday, with their paycheck."
