Hey fellas, has anyone used an octane booster that's effective and also safe for the cat and O2 sensor? I live in California where we have junk 91 octane, and I believe my car can take advantage of 93 (possibly higher). There is 1 gas station around here that sells 100 race gas but it's too far to drive to on a regular basis, so that leaves octane booster as the primary alternative. I heard "Outlaw" brand is fairly effective and one can of it can raise 12 gal from 91 to 93.

I use NOS Octane Boost Racing Formula. It is supposed to increase the octane up to 6 numbers. It says it is safe for oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.
If you add 5 gallons of the 100 octane to your 12 gallons of 91 octane you will get about 93.6 for the 17 gallons.

It is not six tenths, it would make a 91 octane up to 97 octane. You are thinking of octane points which 10 points equals one octane number.

NOS Octane Booster comes in 12oz bottles, so to get from 91 to 97 octane with this quantity, it would have to be added to 2 gal of gas. At that ratio your MPG would fall too. It's not a very cost effective octane booster. http://volvospeed.com/Reviews/octane_boosters_nos.html

I thought about this, but how do you know if there's any trace impurities in the toluene that can damage your fuel injectors?

Id be worried about the cost per gallon of fuel... Around here, the jump from 89-93 is about 10c, with the jump from 89-91 about 5c. Granted, if you can't get 93 where you live, that is kind of an issue if you want 93 gasoline, but I doubt that any add will be able to take you from 89-93 for 10c/gallon of fuel or from 91-93 for 5c/gallon.
That would mean that youre talking 50c-$1.50 for a typical car fillup to get you to 93 octane. What add is that cost effective?

Unless your engine is tuned for E85 I think it would make your car slower... Now there are all sorts of people with turbos or high compression and good engine management getting a ton of hp out of E85.
Toluene and Xylene actually have more energy in them as well giving any engine more hp.

FWIW, every 10% ethanol added will increase the octane 2 numbers. I experimented last summer and ran E20 in both my 98 f150 and 04 accord. Neither is approved for greater than 10%. Both ran fine. The Ford has a new fuel and spark map requiring 91 or higher octane. I imagine the fuel trim had enough range to compensate for the leaner fuel ratio.
