OCI with Pennzoil Ultra

Recently bought a 1997 Camry 2.2L with 187k miles on it. I know nothing about previous OCI but I think it was just quick lube shops, it wasn't too bad at all under the valve cover. I have 1600 miles on the current fill of Mobil Super HM 5w30 from an O'Reillys score in August with a Wix oil filter.

I have 18 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 and 13 of Pennzoil Ultra 10w30 from a current score at Autozone. This will be my next oil change at 3k miles and want to know when to change it on the Pennzoil Ultra, and will use the 5w30. I'm thinking 5k miles with a Wix oil filter. I get an oil change itch and don't know if I will be able to hold much past 5k miles but we'll see what happens, haha.

Considering this car is supposedly a known sludger engine, which it had none under the valve cover, how often should I change the oil? I drive a mix of city and highway and it always gets up to temperature! not really short tripped. Thanks.

I thought the sludger was the 2.4L after that body style and the 3L after that body style. I dumped PU 530 after 9 months and 7200 miles last week and it was in excellent shape. I actually felt I wasted the oil and should have taken it longer. You should be safe with 7500 miles. I think Toyota recommended 5k with conventional back then in that car, today's oils are much much better.

Since you don't know much about this particular vehicles history, I would use the 5w30 for 5k and send off for an analysis. Sure the PU can go far longer, it's probably the safe answer given the situation.

Not that AZ gets terribly cold but just the fact that you have 10w30, save it for the hot summers you have.

2.2L 4cyl 5S-FE in the 1997-2001 Camry is an affected engine.

^^^^This. My last used oil analysis analysis here was a hard 10K and the oil did well but was spent:

Don't worry if the PU turns dark quickly.
It's just cleaning things up.

I don't know if ur car has one but I use my vehicle's oil life indicator. Ultra can handleit

5K and a used oil analysis to see where you are. Every engine is different

I own that same car with 258K. Mobil recommends a maximum 5K OCI on that engine, even using M1. Realize that Mobil usually recommends 10K with regular M1 and 15K with Mobil 1 Extended Performance so I would consider their unwillingness to recommend a long OCI on that engine is significant. As a result, I've always used Full Synthetic and changed every 5K.

My valve cover gasket was replaced last spring and the mechanic described the top engine as spotless. Spotless is what I'd be shooting for in a sludge prone engine. I know that a 5K OCI with Full Synthetic and mixed highway/city works for that engine. Another thing to note in that engine is make sure that you KEEP YOUR PCV VALVE CHANGED.
