I was changing the oil in my wife's 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero usually around 5000K. I usually used Quaker State Full Synthetic 5w30
Ultimate Durability, Valvoline Synpower, Pennzoil Platinum and a Super Tech.(Champion Labs) filter and more recently NAPA Silver filters. She puts way fewer miles on the Saab lately .... Mostly around town. Car has 71K on it. I changed the oil today because I hadn't changed it since Aug.2012 BUT... It was only a 2600 mi OCI. So my question is with a full synthetic and quality filter is it mileage, time or both...and if so what woul be the time span for an OCI if the mileage is minimal. FWIW the oil was blacker than coal.

Once a year.

But if the car doesn't see many short trips, once every 2 years may be doable (would need to confirm with a used oil analysis).

Short trips on a turbo car known for sludge is scrary... I would make sure the oil is changed at least twice a year regardless of miles.

I'm thinking 2Xs/year is good. But you should know the sludge problem ended with the 03 model year.
04+ were not susceptible.

'03 9-5 Aero here with 84xxx miles. I think you should check to see what oil actually is recommended for this car. I have used Mobil 1 0w40 for the 7 years and 60K miles I have owned it. I only drive about 8K a year but much is short distance. Considering the sludge problem with the engine (fixed for '04) I amd somewhat careful. Between that and wanting to get the longest life out of the turbo I change every 4 months or 4K miles. It might be a bit excessive but the $50 per change is good insurance with this car.

Owners manual states 5w30 which is what I use. The manual states Mobil 1, but back in 04, Mobil 1 was about the only full synthetic available in stores. So I have only switched the brand not the viscosity.
