Does the 0w-30 have same base stocks as the 0w-40?

Yes, they are pretty much same oils except 0W40 is bit thicker (on very thin side of W40 oils).
Plus, 0W40 is really cheap in 5qt jugs in Wal Mart.
Tired it in VW CC (I used in current car old GC too) and behaves the same. Very smooth, better cold start then M1 0W40. On high rpm feels very smooth.

I wanted to run some M1 Euro 0w-40 in it but is that Mobil 1 an ester based stock? I don't like to run garbage oil either.

Actually LX289, we recommend the oil change interval for your VW that corresponds with the OEM’s recommendations – 12 months or 10,000 miles. We also strongly recommend that you run an approved engine oil with the VW 502 specification. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 Full Synthetic motor oil would fit that bill nicely. Hope this info helps! – The Pennzoil Team

If you want Mann Amazon use to be a place I got them. You have German designed equipment so I would use an oil exactly that meets the spec and fill exactly the amount they say, not overfill.

Just a follow up.....I am doing very fine on Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40. It is doing a very good job with cleaning my engine. I was quite surprised at only less than 2000 it is very brown. I am running the Bosch filter. All is well. Thanks for the help guys

Well I couldn't edit my earlier post for some odd reason. I was going to add:
I am going to continue to run the same oil and I have a stock of Mann oversize filters for it so I am good to go.
