OCI for 97 Camry

I have a 97 Camry with 203,000 miles. It's my beater car that I take to football games, the airport etc. It's also the family extra car if there is a problem with one of the others.

We bought the car with 78,000, it's had Mobil 1 10w30 with a 5000 mile oci since we bought it. Recently I put Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 in it with the intention of an oci every 10,000 or so. In another thread some posters brought up the oil jelling (sludge) problem with this vintage Camry. The question is, is it a bad idea to go 10k on this car even with Mobil 1 Extended Performance?

Yes, bad idea with that engine. Go back to M1 and 5000.

No not a problem. I changed my daughters 99 Lexis RX300 with Mobil 1 10w30 with 10,000 OCIs and had no sludge problems at all. It was a known sludger. Now I wouldn't do that with dino. All Mobil 1 oils are very good about resisting deposites. The Honda HTO spec shows that.

Was the Lexus one of their cars known to sludge?

The bottle GUARANTEES Mobil 1 Extended Performance can go 15K. I have a known sludger that is going on Mobil 1 Extended Performance in April with 6 month intervals regardless of mileage. 15K Guaranteed!

I ran Red Line 5w30 in a '97 Camry V-6. I performed a used oil analysis at 5,000 miles and it only looked "average" with this high-end oil, not great. These sludge monsters are known for destroying conventional oil by 3,000 miles and synthetics by 5,000 miles due to narrow oil passages in the cylinder head. If you insist on trying 10,000 mile OCIs, then you should ABSOLUTELY have a used oil analysis done on the first cycle before continuing with this policy.
