OCI and Reccomended OIl

I am new to the forum. I have been a 3000 mile
OCI guy for quite a few years. I have a 1998
Tacoma 4X4 2.7L with 74k on it. I have been using
Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 in it since 47k. I am going to get a
oil analysis done the next time I change.
I want to know of the synthectics M1 and Pennzoil Platinum
which is supposed to be better. How many miles I
should go to get the UOA? I want the best protection I can get. So conventional or synthetic?

Mobil has put more research dollars into synthetic motor oils than any other company. Going by that, I would (and I do) use Mobil 1. In fact Mobil makes Mobil 1 Extended Performance which can last 15,000 miles per oil change according to them but my plan is to only go 10,000 miles per oil change. I have read that regular Mobil 1 can last 10,000 miles per oil change as well.

ExxonMobil is huge in synthetic oil research. Royal Dutch/Shell is also huge in lubes including synthetics, more so in Europe than in the U.S. Their Pennzoil Platinum seems to be a fine oil.

I don't know if anyone knows which oil is better. You might ask Terry Dyson and pay him for interpretation of the oil analysis.

I'd be happy with either at 10,000 mile ODI.

I will say that when I changed to PP I started getting about 2 more MPG on the gas. I went to
4600 miles this last oil change. It's a hard habit to break. I just could not go any longer.

Did you previously use Mobil 1? I'm planning on using Pennzoil Platinum in my car after reading various good reports and the price is much less than Mobil 1.

I previously used Mobil 1, but now I am using PP in my car.

Depending on the used oil analysis results, I'll probably switch back to Mobil 1 Extended Performance and take the OCI to 10k.

I've always been an M1 user, and THAT is a hard habit to break!

Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1 STANDARD EDITION have similar TBN numbers and neither is recommended by their blenders for extended drains.
If you want to run extended drains, use neither.
Mobil 1 Extended Performance is advertised for extended drains. You can get it at Wal-Mart or most auto parts stores.
Certain Amsoil varieties are rated for true extended drains. Consult an Amsoil dealer on this board for purchase of such an oil and expert advice on what to use.
Are any other gas engine oils marketed in the US for extended drains in cars that don't reccomend extended drains? I can't think of one.

I have never used Mobil 1. I have use Castrol
Syntec and PP. I have a hard time going over 5000
miles without changing the oil and filter. I have had 4 Toyota 4X4 Trucks and 1 Toyota 4
Runner. All have been the best vehicles I have
ever owned. No major repairs on any. No warranty
wotk on any of the 5. I change oil every 3000 miles and have gotten 150,000 miles of care free
driving out of all of them. I sold the 4 runner
to a friend and it has 487,000 miles and counting. I did have to put a timing chain in the 4 runner because my x-wife drove 1200 miles
with it 2 quarts low on oil. Not much later I
heard the chain clacking and took it to the
dealer to confirm. The first thing the mechanic
asked me as it only had 187,000 on it. Did you run it low on oil very much. I told hime about the incident. He told me that when more than a
quart low the chain was out of the oil bath.
I have heard of very rare incidents of fatal
mechanic failure. Most of the time it was due to
poor maintenance or abuse.

Please clarify which oil you're referring to when you say "Pennzoil Platinum". Are you talking about Pennzoil Platinum synthetic? Or just the normal Pennzoil conventional oil? If you meant "Pennzoil Platinum", how is it possible that you've been using it for 27,000 miles when this oil is fairly new to the market? Do you put that many miles on the vehicle in a years time? Or were/are you using the older Pennzoil synthetic oil, which is not named "Platinum"?

I have been using Pennzoil Platinum since 47k.
I have put 27000 on it in the past 15 months.
I bought the truck from the orignal owner that
I work with 15 months ago. He changed the oil
every 3000 miles at the delaership and everthing
that was done was at the dealership and all
receipts were in a envelope in the glove box.
It was a garage queen and he babied it all the
way. I could not pass this truck up. A 1998 with
47k 15 months ago was as cherry as it gets.
Everywhere I take it, people say it looks like
it is brand new. I am also a detailing fanatic.
Paint is flawless. Has 1 minor door ding that
I plan on having fixed by a PDR man.

Go with the Mobil 1 and do an analysis at 5K. Start at that point to confirm that the oil is working fine. Post the numbers here and find out where you should change mileage wise. Your going to have to ease your mind in the the extended OCI idea...but no dought you Will be a believer.

On the next change go to that point,then do another analysis of the oil where folks think you should change and send it off for results. I think you will find that a good synthetic oil will go 10K and a good full flow will do the same. The analysis will set the trend for your OCI's.
