I wouldn't try it. High mileage filters are recent inovations compared to the standards that are still in place today.

Even my friend who has a nice BMW doesn't feel comfortable with the once per year oil changes. If it were me I'd have a standard of which 5000 mile OCI would be the norm.

I am running pure one's in my corolla and on my zx9r. I do change out filter every oil change and since i got quite a few at 2 for 1, i can afford to change them out. I cant remember if my manual says filter every other oil change but I do not believe it does.

I am running the Amsoil SDF-15 filter. It is the oversized filter for my application. More than twice the size of the stock filter. It has the synthetic media in it and can go past the 10K OCI I am trying.

If your filters that big then your fine. My personal usage would not go past 5K when I do mine. Currently I do my OCI at 3K. I don't mind as I much prefer to change mine out more often.

Before I consider going 10K oil changes I want it in writing/prof that it's safe for the engine. One pays big money and you don't want to let your engine fall apart.

With the changes/improvements in oil in the last 30 years the 3k oil change is a joke. While I would not expect the F60-15 biasply tire tire that came stock on my 73 Z-28 to last 80,000 miles like a good radial can today I would not ask a 30wt oil from back then to last 7,500 miles today. I was running 7,500 OCI's in my 89 Toyota 2.4L 4x4 using Castrol Syntec and I had over 290,000 miles on that before I retired it. So I think todays synthetic oils properly filtered will easly do 10,000 - 20,000 miles and as soon as Amsoil makes an EaO filter for my Sonata I will give it a try.

WOW Thanks for the link! Good information on the oil. I think I am going to leave this in for 10K OCI. I have a 4.7 V8 and I beleive it would be easier on the oil than a 4 cyl.

I used to drive 100+ miles/day....450/week. ran 10k OCI in our subaru 2.2L and 3.0 pathfinder. Mobil 1. sump size matters. 4.5 qts in the subie was fine, 4 qts in the v6 nissan was a stretch. I had to push the subaur hard, the nissan not so much. Anyway, never did any tests but both were good for 10k. nissan would get noisy at 11. subie was fine at 12k but I'd get nervous and change.

Pulled the engine apart at 90k in the subaru. cams were mirror glossy, no varnish, no pitting, to sludge. Valve clearances still all spot-on oem spec.

did this for 2 OCIs with our grand caravan. no problems either UNTIL THE COMMUTE CHANGED. Shorter, in-city commutes...max 6k OCI full syn. Just felt a little off beyond that.

I think if you're driving hiway miles, easy on the pedal, 10k on syn is fine.

Mori did the 10k Syntec intervals for 122k in his A4. Inside engine pics are crazy-clean. Look for the thread under "5w-50".

I agree with going 7500 miles and either dumping it or get a used oil analysis to see if you can stretch it longer.

From what I have been reading and checking into on the used oil analysis I think that I will only take this oil to 5K and then check it. I am not sure it will last as long as an Amsoil or even a Pennzoil Platinum. Time will tell.

Actually, BMW's have only an average filter insert. The insert does appear to have been treated with some varnish like stuff as the pleats are very rigid.

It seems that most folks here approve of GM's OLM's recommendations and that it's calculations are based on a crankcase filled with conventional oil.

In my experience, my Chevy work truck with a 4.3L V6 has it's OLM calling for an oil change at around 10k miles....sooo according to GM, a 10k OCI with Syntec will be just ducky....

fwiw, my Honda OLM goes off before 8000 miles and I drive a lot of long trips.

If you have a load of oil in your stash, run 5k intervals until the inventory is low.

used oil analysis will tell you more about your engine than your oil at these intervals.

Additionally, by the time your inventory has dwindled, a new oil will be popular.
