The last time I did a similar transmission (NV3500) I remember the shifter knob threads being incredibly tight. Today's NV4500 was no different.
I went digging for a strap wrench and stumbled upon my "tourniquet" oil filter wrench. Still new, never used. I didn't figure it would work but wanted to try anyway. I was very surprised that it worked incredibly well. It did not slip at all even with an 18" ratchet. This is my new official shifter knob removal tool!
Also the lower retaining ring spring was the strongest I've personally encountered. Everyone online is depressing it with two screwdrivers, which is sketchy. I grabbed a random drop of pipe, kneeled on the seat and put most of my weight on it while turning, and this also worked perfectly.
