NV 5600 and Amsoil MTF not getting along.

I recently changed the factory fill on my Dodge 3500 4x4 truck's NV5600 6spd to Amsoil MTF. The transmission is noticably harder to shift and very "notchy".

I'm going to dump the Amsoil MTF and refill.

Any suggestions on replacement lube that meets the Chrysler MS-9224?

Pennzoil, Valvoline, Swepco, Driven, BG, Redline... have a synchromesh equivalent.

Verify that the current fill level of Amsoil is not too high or too low.

And, how many miles on the Amsoil MTF? or was it MTG?

All GREAT questions!

What year?

How many miles?

What ambient temperature?

2004 Dodge 3500 4x4 - Cummins diesel - 205,000 miles - 0f to 85f.
App. 1,500 miles on this fill. 6 quarts.
Currently temps are 45f, but that will change back to single digit morning temps.
Perhaps the Amsoil MTF, which meets the spec, is a little to slippery?? Perhaps the syncros have some wear?

4.75 quart capacity for the nv5600, unless modified to hold more fluid. Filling the full 5 quarts is one thing. But 6?

I would make sure fluid is at correct level.

200k and 10 years... transmission has some wear and might not be fluid related

Overfilling an NV5600 by a whole quart is highly recommended, and in the case of rebuilt NV5600's from many Chrysler approved rebuilders, it may be required for warranty.

NV5600 requires more fluid than the fill plug allows. Fill thru top PTO bolt hole. 6-7 quarts are recommended by Blumenthal and others in the know.

Perhaps just normal wear. I do notice that the 3rd gear is a little balky, probably Synchromesh wear.

Did you resolve the issue? Yes I know 6 year old thread.

I have a local customer, same truck, 140K miles, changed over to Amsoil MTF. Balky, notchy especially in 3rd and 4th.

He bought it used, unknown fluid, but shifted fine. I have told him to drive for a bit. See if it's the synchros cleaning up.

Why not just use the fluid from the dealer? Does Chrysler sell the fluid, or are you stuck going aftermarket? It would seem the original fluid carried it for quite a while without issue.

Sometimes you just have to go with what works.
