Nuclear Power - My Plan

Every couple of years we get in trouble when a third world country starts wanting nuclear power and then starts enriching uranium which can be made into bombs.

North Korea has already become a nuclear power and now its Iran.

My idea is to go build a nuclear reactor for these guys and then run it for them. Lets call it preventive medicine. Its far cheaper to just build it for these guys than to be blackmailed. Clinton spent Billions of American dollars to buy North Korea out of nuclear capability and they took the money and used it to go nuclear anyway.

These countries dont have to spend or invest a dime and that should be appealing. They just have to run wires to connect to the power grid. We build the reactor for them and we do it in an ultra secure manner where we can put a fortified regiment of 500 army regulars to stand guard over it much like we do with an embassy except slightly better staffed. We build the reactor and then run the reactor and then guard the reactor.

We charge 12.5 cents per kilowatt hour which is fairly high but about the same as what our citizens in California pay and then we can contract it out to an American utility who pays a portion of the profits to the American Government to help pay for the staffing of the Army.

12.5 cents per kilowatt hour is slightly expensive but its really kind of cheap when you dont have to make the initial outlay of building an expensive structure. Countries could use the money saved from building the reactor on other projects. Nuclear power generation is however cheap and the utility willing to invest in it would be able to turn a profit even after paying for a reactor. The US could offer tax breaks on profits made from such a project and that of course would be appealing to American Utilities.

With tax breaks and the cheap production of nuclear power a company could make money even if they had to bear the cost of added security for their plant.

It would take a substantial military event to overrun an entrenched position with 500 highly trained and well armed military personnel and airplanes travel fast. The reactor should be secure and safe.

Most importantly the reactor would stand as US soil and property much like an embassy and the reactor manager could even be assigned diplomatic standing and everybody wins. Consider the reactor to be American soil just like an embassy.

Third world countries get relatively cheap power without having to spend a cent to get it. American companies get new investment opportunities where they could turn a profit and grow earnings. It would take a few years for profits to equal the capital expense but eventually over the long term they would have a profitable enterprise. We get a few more Army jobs. The world is a safer place without new nuclear power being handed to bomb hungry governments. We expand the reach of nuclear power rather than burning fossil fuels that keep increasing in price. Everybody should be happy.

I just dont understand why every 2-3 years we see third world countries that really dont like us being allowed to enrich uranium and go nuclear.

We have fortified and guarded embassies why cant we do the same with nuclear power plants?

Why do we have to worry about rogue states going nuclear and bombing us when there are options? Why cant we do this?

Other than the North Korea problem and some possible concerns over Iran, where is the need? I can seeing China maybe pursuing nuclear power because of need, but they already have major weapons systems.

We need a specific problem to fit the solution to.

There was an article in the paper this morning about how Iran is enriching Uranium and going nuclear. I really dont want Iran to go nuclear. I understand why they think they need a nuclear reactor and I understand where they are coming from but I still dont want them to go nuclear. Iran with the bomb sort of scares me.

Of course if we built a reactor for 1 country then others would want one as well. But maybe it could be done if we spent some thought on it.

Given that:
* the likes of Toshiba can manufacture an allegedly tamperproof 10MW generator set that can be installed and is self moderating and self sufficient; and
* these countries have a less than reliable grid, making decentralisation attractive.

I like the idea of first world aid (to suitable applicants) being comprised of remote stationed, stand alone smal nukes/

I also like the idea of the supplying nation being given "greenhouse credits" for this, given that otherwise they would be filthy old generation coal/oil plants.

Nothing like clean fission waste material.
