Now OK to Blind Other Drivers?

When in the history of automotive culture did it become OK to routinely blind other drivers with your headlights and fogs? It was not that long ago, before cheap aftermarket HIDs invaded the USA, that getting blinded was a rare occurrence. People did not feel it was OK to drive around on public streets with their high beams on continually, or with their "old-school" 55W halogen Cibie/Marchal/Hella driving lights lit up. Yeah, there were some misaimed headlights, but that was not intentional blinding. The attitude today seems to be "I'm putting HIDs in my car/truck, and I don't care if it blinds other people. I think I can see better, and it looks a lot cooler, and that's all that matters. It's my car/truck, and I can do whatever I want with it."

The other evening, at twilight, this dude in a "brodozer" (a lifted, 4x4, crew-cab dualie pickup, with the front bumper at decapitation height) was approaching me, with super bright, blue tinted headlights and fog lights (and not a speck of fog in the air). Very obnoxious glare monsters! No doubt these were 55W HIDs, in factory halogen reflectors. So I flash him with my highs, and he flashes me back with his highs. His high beams barely punched through the glare of his lows and fogs.

This is such a routine occurrence, it is getting to the point that driving at night is a PITA. It's a shame that back at the beginning of the automotive industry, polarized headlights and polarized windshields were not required by Federal standards as standard equipment.

Around here, people aren't too bad with the HIDs. They just all run around with their high beams on, if they use them at all. Of course, it's typical to get stuck behind the guy cruising down a pitch black road with no oncoming traffic, and he won't turn his high beams on, so you can't see more than 50 feet in front of him.

I also think HID low beams, even factory, should be banned. The cutoff tends to be so sharp that if the car goes over a bump, you get blinded. HID high beams are fine, as other drivers should never see them.

The problem with factory low beam HIDs is that USA regulations do not require auto leveling.

The trend here is for these guys to put in high beam hid simulators into the low beam sockets, which is 'always on' highbeams at that point. And you are completely correct in how you emphasized the narcisism in todays young drivers (under 40)
.Its all party, all the time down here, with ego tripped out ,tailgating,whocaresthatswhatinsuranceisfor,waste-case attitudes.....Its terrible.

Even oem hids are annoying and blind, ex. The 07+ Cadillac Escalade. I can't stand having one coming towards me at night. They all have terrible glare.

I can't really complain though, I installed h9 bulbs in my lows and fogs but I've never been flashed...

I have noticed a lot of this in my area lately and it really makes me

Even OEM lights on vehicles seem to be poorly aimed for the height of the vehicle in most cases. P/U trucks are the worst that I encounter.

I would love to see cops pull these idiots over and give 'em tickets instead of harassing me for 10km's (6 miles) over the limit.

I'm with Stevie on that. Low beams shouldn't be good enough to be your normal driving lights. They should be designed primarily around not blinding other drivers, and giving you a bit of light to see with. High beams, on the other hand, can light the world.

The OP has a valid point. Its a problem that didn`t use to exist, but its getting pretty bad now. Most of our TCH here is single lane, and undivided - with a 100 kmh speed limit, that translates to 115-130 kmh in actual use (or about 70-80 mph). Getting blinded by a car doing 80 mph as he`s passing right next to you is not fun. Especially when you are cornering.

I agree that they should be restricted to high beams only. Simple solution to a growing problem.

I don't much drive at night any more, but I sure don't have any problem giving back to jerks that don't have any manners with their lights.

It seems to be the only time I've used my brights in the last ten years. Even on the open highway you hardly see a place to use the brights around here. Too much traffic.

This is a pet peeve with me, too. Even when not on high beam.
Not only can lights be pinpoint blinding, vehicles are allowed to have different heights. This should be standardized or otherwise modified to not blind other drivers.

Same here, although many people I've noticed just seem to ignore my high-beam flashes. They keep on driving toward me with their high-beams on as if they haven't noticed my warnings. Sigh...

The moron in the monster truck gives all HID headlight users a bad name. Advice for Cudgell and Jethro in your mud buckets: try compensating for your manhood in a way that doesn't [censored] others off. Thanks.
