Not impressed with PureONE relief valve

Thanks for all the interesting info. If bypass pressure is important,maybe I should just use the Honda oem filter. They probably have the bypass pressure built to their preferred spec.

I think she'd be relieved that I'm exploring new "firsts" elsewhere. You never know, though ..she may feel "neglected".

Possibly. Keep in mind that unless it's something specific, generic bypass valve ratings vary. WIX 8-11, Puro 12-16, etc. If it makes a difference, the aftermarket tends to conform to that need.

However, in no way does that diminish my respect for Gary's position, or all the efforts and good-will gestures he puts forth on this site. I have learned much from him. Don't completely agree with him, but I sure do like and appreciate him!

Gary, your above explanation in regards to the pump NOT being in relief, I agree with you 100%. My disagreement stems from the pump in relief mode. But I think we'll leave this alone now

I'm bumping this to add a bit of thought fuel for those who cannot share my conceptual - fill in the blank backwards reasoned utterances here.


The problem with viewing this is that we have one component that confounds comparative views in some "static" sense.

That is, you've got viscosity to deal with. This makes the appearance of any given flow different from the exact same flow, through the exact same restriction, difficult ..especially since you're switching states from an unconventional "flow dictated" view ..to a traditional pressure/resistance view.

Now I'll make you struggle here to imagine something like The Bay of Fundy as the tide comes in ..except that the Bay's flow is with the incoming tide ..and there was some barrier to hold the advancing water column in one place. That is, the Bay cannot accept the water at that rate, at that viscosity. We have a weer and a spillway involved ..but no altering of flow from the source.
 
Ok guys, just to shoot back on topic for a sec about the original concern of the valve....I just cut open the PL24651 off of my 94 f250/351. It has the same relief valve as the OP's filter shows. Pushing on the center rivit opens the relief valve, and letting off, that funky spring easily returns it to the closed position with out dammage to either. I repeated this multiple times so...

My father's Camry is due for an oil change soon. He has the Purolator Premium Plus L14477 (slightly longer L14476 same PSI rating). I will be cutting it open and will have the camera ready.

He's getting a WIX oil filter no matter what I find in the Purolator.

ok that's good to know. I had a hard time believing that Purolator would install an inoperative bypass valve on all of their filters. Wonder what sunfire was doing differently than you?

The only thing different is that we took apart different model PureOne filters. He said he didn't find a problem. But I had a problem with mine. I speculated that other Purolators might have similar issues.

I should be getting a used Purolator Premium soon which uses the same style leaf spring in the relief valve and same PSI rating as the PureOne I had problems with. I will report my findings here. And hopefully put this thread to rest.
