Northen Territory to remove speed limits

Accurate turn of a phrase, "tyranny of distance within the great Territory," Adam Giles. I have been outback and the space is overwhelming. I would be a little concerned about hitting one of the critters at high speed. Seems that would be fatal.

However, good on the Aussies. Why should the government be concerned about a self correcting problem in the NT. High speed, poor equipment, bad luck, bad judgement = one less hoon to tolerate. Sounds like a win win to me.
 
For a second i thought they were referring to canada's north WEST territory....

Cuz ice and unlimited speed are such a good combo( though also self correcting)
 
Hopefully they put "Reasonable and Prudent" signs up in place of the old speed limit signs.

How fast would you drive if there were no speed limits, and if conditions were good? In my Camaro, I'd probably go 110 mph.
 
130 kph plus 10 or 15 is about how fast I'd ever want to go anyways for a prolonged time. Also this not a divided highway so 300+kph closing speeds must be a bit dangerous...
The Tracker has only been up to 130kph once and it was fast enough, the Focus seems fine at that speed but it starts to suck the gas too much to do that all the time.

I feel comfortable around 180Km/h (which is about 110Mph) too for sustained speeds.
 
I'm not sure if this is a fair comparison but on my recent trip to Germany we drove through most of Bavaria with the cruise set at 180kph.

I had a dream the other night that I was in a garage listening to a couple of guys debating the merits of 20W-50 versus 30W-70 oils. One guy was saying "Bah, that 20W-50 is only good for lubricating sheep shears." Then I realized I was dreaming about Australia.

Back when I was a kid, there were some stretches of road, not just in the NT which had a black circle with diagonal line through it, and the intent of the sign wasn't "unlimited", but "unregulated"...which didn't mean unpatrolled.

A couple of time, I remember Dad discussing with the cops how 100MPH was reasonable given the road, time, and conditions (middle of day, good visibility etc.), and at least once that 50MPH was reasonable, when the cop thought that fog and 50MPH weren't conducive to safety.

Alas when they went to strictly enforced, regulated, speed limits, the jokers doing 65MPH through pea soup fog are entirely legal, while those doing 70MPH on a crystal clear day are criminals.

Depends what I'm driving. Cherokee...about 75. Caddy...maybe 85-90.

I'd expect most folks to stick to 130-140 km/h, with a few daredevils going 160-170 km/h. With lots of land and few people, I can see where getting through there as quickly as possible would be appealing.

My charger handles superbly at 100mph. If I could I'd drive in the neighbourhood of that speed.
My new edge is dropped 1.5 inches and at 100mph it feels like I'm barely moving however depending on the road I'd drive according to the conditions.
 
The Gumball 3000 might do it, its more popular and expensive than ever. I think entry is over $100k now and to keep up partying like them for a week figure another $100k, and than you need a car!

A tri continent South Africa, Australia, Japan in 7 days would be cool.

IMO, no speed limit is not the problem, everyone driving at different speed (70 vs 110mph) is the problem if there is no speed limit. It would be very unsafe for an unfocused driver at 110mph slamming into a 70mph "slow poke" in front.
 
That's the real problem, unless Australia has very good driver training and rigid enforcement of passing lanes...they are going to see a spike in wrecks.

You will have some moron who doesn't look in their review and pulls out doing 70 in front of a Mercedes doing twice that.
