I'm a bit down on my area now. Thinking I'll make what I can here for the next 20 years than sell everything, take my money and leave. Pump and dump since money in RE is so easy to make around here with all the people from overseas moving in.
I'm thinking a place in NH for the summer on top of a mountain would be nice, and a boat in the mid Atlantic states with a condo for the winter, or maybe the Caymen Islands and just say see you USA all together.
Everywhere has it's issues, it's just finding the balance of issues you can tolerate.
One of my old roommates and I actually half jokingly kicked around the idea of just packing up and going to Houston. Atlanta was another consideration, but it's just Charlotte/Birmingham majorly amplified with more people.
For me, large cities in the South with nearby outdoor recreational areas/rural areas seem to work. I don't like anything from VA up to NY/MA. Overly populated, overly taxed, just not my lifestyle. NH, VT, and ME are amazing though. I can't deal with that kind of cold in the winter, but during late spring/summer/early fall it's a phenomenally beautiful part of the country. The cleanest air I have breathed, some of the most incredible scenery I have ever seen, and just a totally different way of life from much of the country. Obviously the populated areas are like any other populated area, but my sister and her husband are the caretakers of a large farm in a rural, but very wealthy part of VT. The scenery is simply amazing there. During spring, you see shades of green that you won't see anywhere else I know of. I hardly ever use the term "breathtaking," but that's what it is.
It's a different way of life though. No Wal-Mart. No Walgreens. Forget about a bulk super club type of store. There might be some general stores, and a handful of gas stations. Fast food is rare, night life happens at people's houses/acreage, not at clubs. If you want to get away and slow down though, it's unbeatable. And there are some nice restaurants and stores since there is a lot of wealth there.
For day to day life though, I guess I'll take my convenient, fun, interesting, cheap, ghetto Southern cities.
For grass greenness reference, a picture of my truck at my sister's farm in VT circa 2008...prior to being beaten to heck. I wish it (the truck) still looked like that!
My problem is I have to be near salt water. If I can't get out on my boat or another boat 4-5 days a week when its warm I'd go crazy.
From May to October I take my boat out just about every day after work, and on weekends I fish in the morning, race sailboats during the day, and end the day either at the dock, yacht club or cruising around on my boat.
But I would like a place up in NH and my buddy and I plan on going in one one in a few years. Something on a mountain top with no neighbors.
The mid Atlantic states are nice, I'd buy a house on a canal so I can have at least a small boat available at all times.
