Here is a current map of oil pipelines in Canada and the USA plus refining capacity.

The are some interesting things on it like the Dakota access line, the notable absence of oil pipelines between Texas and California and the capacity from Canada to the USA. If you look closely you can also see the direction arrows. Enjoy.

Hard to read but it's not showing pipelines that run from Tx/La up through the mid Atlantic. Gas, fuels and oil.

Ten year lurker here , just joined first post. I had to make a comment about the pipeline map and how it affected my family. If you notice on the map North of Detroit there is a pipeline, my family home was forcibly sold or would have been taken by the state of Michigan for that pipeline . That land was in my family for 209 years . My father was forced to sell it to the oil company, he got three times the value of the property . We were not in need of money. If he would have fought it any further he would have only got the actual value . Prime riverfront property five generations gone .

That’s interesting. Is this a Michigan thing? I’m more familiar with Canada. There, the land is not purchased. An easement is obtained. The line is buried and the land owner gets a yearly cheque.

The state had to take all of the property? Not just the relevant part or was the property no big enough to partition? That's a shame to see family property like that lost to a pipeline. Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Your correct they were going across at a angle , my father said he didn't want to sell a portion , and also didn't want a pipeline so close to his home . He had no option to not do the deal . They usually pay 2 times the value in his case they did 3 time . His lawyer said not to persist , because if push came to shove the oil company could pay fair market value and force the sell . My father was 90 years old . I was in line to be next to live there . Sad thing is the family at one time owned 6 miles of river front at the beginning. Little by little over 200 years it was only piece left . St. Clair River , separates Michigan from Canada.
