Noob with a question..

I have a vehicle that is only used once or twice a month, what should oil change intervals be in this case? Something tells me that it probably isn't a great idea to let oil sit in the motor for long periods without use?

The vehicle in question is a 1991 Chevy Astro van, 4.3 V6 with 200,000 kms (124,000 miles)

It depends on how far you drive it when you take it out. If you go on a long drive, say 20 miles, you should be fine as the blowby will largely vaporize from the heat, but short trips load the oil with garbage that degrades things.

If you drive those longer trips then you could change once a year IMO.

Just look at the oil on the dip stick
if it shows no sign of moisture once a year is ok, if a good syn. oil every two years would even be ok

Okay, that seems reasonable. While on the subject anyway, what oil should I be using? I've used several different brands/weights in this van but I'd like to settle on something.. I had Castrol Syntec 5w40 recommended a few times for it's easy flow when cold and thickness for the high mileage internals. Any other suggestions? A high mileage oil maybe?

I would run a 30 weight Valvoline Maxlife in it. For winter go with the 5w30 or even a synthetic 5w30. Do you really need a 40 weight? What oil pressure do you get hot at speed and at idle? That would bear on the oil weight you should use.
