We've heard a lot about KIA & Hyundai engines knocking or tapping with aftermarket filters. I usually use a genuine KIA filter on our Sportage pictured above, but this time I wanted to try a Fram Ultra along with extended performance synthetic to see if I could get a longer OCI.

We've driven the car over 100 miles so far with no bad or unusual noises, so maybe I can get away with the non-OEM filter.

My biggest problem with this oil change is that I've had trouble getting the plug to seal off without leaking for the first time ever (in fact, I've never had plug leaks with any of our vehicles). I've documented the plug situation in this thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4078132/1

The need for an OEM filter on Hyuidais and Kias is a marketing hype. I just bought six of those filter last month. Good for 15k miles they say.

I also believed it was marketing hype but, I had some valve noises with a regular from filter. Quality top notch filters are generally better. For someone to say it is basically hype and doesn't occur that's a stretch.

My Accent will tic on cold start with an OEM filter.

I think a lot to do with the KIA/Hyandia OEM filter TSB recommendation stems from people using very sub-standard cheap filters or somehow getting a totally junk counterfeit filter on their car.

The TSB originally came out in the mid 90s. Hyundai at the time had some of their filters at 90* to the block. My Accent is at about 45* and the Gen Coupe is straight down.

If it is the filter leaking down that should not be a problem if the filter stays at least half full. No different that putting a new filter on dry.

Owned a 2000 Elantra for over 10 years. Used every oil filter under the sun and only one of them made it tick at idle. I can't remember what brand it was but it was very noticeable.

Good for UP TO 15,000 miles.

Corrected that for you. Apparently Hyundai/Kia have found 'some' aftermarket filters can cause engine noise issues, mostly at start up. I don't call it a rattle because at least one member has posted here that is goes beyond a start up rattle.

That said, it's only some filters and if the FU works fine, as I'm sure many others also do, then it's not an issue.

As for extending your oci, a good idea. However just be aware that Kia(and Hyundai) generally has a six month max time interval along with 7500 miles whichever comes first oci/fci recommendation to maintain warranty. Most quality silicone adbv filters will do that. If you are no longer under warranty, then run as you see fit.

I have run multiple brands and never an OEM in our KIA without the slightest issue, but it takes cartridge filters.

As stated I really think it is pertinent to the older vehicles and just a few cheap aftermarket filters. The one specifically called out in the TSB was an ecore for example.

Many here run non OEM filters in their KIA/Hyundai without issue as well, but the OEM filters are also high quality if you can find real ones at a good price.
