Noisy Escape Engine Using 5w30 Mobil 1

OK...He took out the Mobil 1 and put the Castrol 5w30 back in and all is quiet...A filter swap didn't quiet it down...I said maybe try Motorcraft Blend next time and see how that works out...Walmart has a 5 quart jug here for 15 bucks...When I had my 99 4.6 I used Castrol 5w30 for the first 80K miles then went to 5w20 Motorcraft Blend till 120K miles then went to Full Synthetic and all went well...It had 200K miles before a hurricane totaled it.

Well I knew there was a reason I don't run M1. I've ran Havoline, MC, and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and have never heard any noises during startup. Even in the coldest weather, the ps pump doesn't count. Unless they've changed Castrol I'd almost wonder if that's what caused it... in the few vehicles I've ran it left a pinkish varnish.

Similar story here. Mobil 1 5W-20 ran loud in my '07 Chrysler. So loud, I was about to bring it to the dealership for diagnosis. It was a tap-tap-tap at idle, cold or hot. The engine only had 5,000 miles when I switched to it. It was the first time I ran Mobil 1 in it (and in anything for that matter) and I figured I'd switch the oil out before I did anything rash. It's quiet on just about every other brand of oil, so now I just avoid Mobil 1 all together. Too afraid I'll be buying an engine noise!

Tell him not to waste his time or money on a "synthetic blend". Have him keep on using dino. Sounds like he has impeccable luck with GTX. Keep using it.

Turns out the noise came back a day later...I think the Mobil 1 did some serious harm to the Escape...I am by NO MEANS saying Mobil 1 is bad oil as I know people who use it and love it...Most people here that use Mobil 1 have no issues with it...But the bulk of these people started using Mobil 1 on low mileage engines...Putting Mobil 1 in a high mileage engine does not seem like a good idea...Well at least not in this 00 Escape...The Escape was as quiet as can on Castrol 5w30.

IMHO it seems going to a blend first then going to Full Synthetic woud be a better idea...More so if the mileage is over 100K miles.

I don't think it was the oil, as a synthetic, semi synthetic, or dino of the mentioned brands in this thread should all meet the specs of his engine. I'm not saying it didn't calling you a liar, however if the oil did cause a problem it was not because it was a synthetic, or semi etc, if a shop changed his oil maybe they put some contaminated oil in ? even then I don't see this causing problem that you would not see by checking the oil. I'm not sure what happened, but before I chucked it up to damage I would do some more filter changes if that did eliminate the noise for a day..the synthetic could have dislodged some sludge, or gunk/dirt...but even then with today's oils, and the ford late year model, him babying his stuff, Castrol GTX is a fine oil as well I have a hard time seeing that. Keep changing out the filter a couple times, wait a week or so do another drain/fill with Castrol to get any residual synthetic out. I'm not a fan of any oils, but I have used both oils Mobil in a 94 Ranger with a 4.0, and several other makes/models of cars, trucks, engines etc never a problem with any of them, I also ran Castrol for most of my life with no problems

I have a hard time believing that genuine Mobil 1 suddenly and irreversiblly caused piston slap or worn the piston and bores. Did he actually see the shop pour in the Mobil 1? If not who knows what was really put in.

It might not even be piston slap. Maybe some depositis got disloded into a tappet or something. Valve clatter or timing chain can sound a lot like piston slap. Piston slap is faster, slightly deeper and more random and usually gets quieter after a cold start. If you can get a timing light hooked up see if the noise is timed to camshaft speed or crank speed. If I had a clatter that wouldn't go away I'd probably try running MMO.

I must be going deaf. Both Honda Elements and my Grand Marquis were very quite on Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 and they are still quite on Mobil 1 5W-20. Time for a hearing aid I guess.

Just to be sure, drain the crank case, replace filter and replace oil. carstol gtx is good oil, mobil 1 is probably good, but i only run it in my gearbox, not in the engine, it is too expensive for my budget. I would suggest using Castrol Edge though, every one who uses it finds the engine runs very smoothly - and i recently stocked up when it was on sale. another good oil is napa synthetic, it goes on sale for $3 per quart periodically. or just go with the tried and true Super Tech synthetic, but the price tag is currently too high for my budget as well - i would buy Super Tech at 15$ a jug, but $17.50 is a touch too high. i cannot believe that the mobil 1 has caused a piston slap to develop, but if that is what it seems, then drain the oil immediately, maybe they put in ATF instead of motor oil - who knows, anything can happen when you're not watching them.

I have a hard time believing it also but thats what happened...He says he watched the guy put in the Mobil 1 as he said he was standing right there...The noise does go away afer it is warmed up but it takes a full 5-7 minutes... It is loud as
I heard it when it was cold.

I will mention the MMO to him.
