No toyota 0W-20

Checked this arvo, and Toyota, who have the technology to bring in whole cars still can't work out how to get lighter base stock oils into the country.

The Toyota oils were 20W-50 petrol/diesel (SL/CF). 5W-40 synthetic (SL/CF), 15w40 CI-4, and a vvt 10w30.

Bloke at the desk (and I've been buying stuff off him for nearly 20 years) has never seen a 0W-anything at a dealer.

They do have gear oil in cans 'though, which I thought was pretty cool.

I always found it funny that 0w30 in a regular store or a regular shop seems tricky to find (aside from GC).

Then I go up north and hit a truck stop and everyone knows exactly where 0w30 is kicking around.

All down to markets I guess. I know some people are (ill informed but) afraid to run 0W-20 because it "calls for 5W-20".

Australia, right? Totally off topic, but the lack of 0 weight oils wouldn't stop me from moving there. Beautiful place.

Yep Oz...plenty of 0Ws, but no 20s.

Last one was M1 back back in the day.

If you want to move here and have engineering type quals, the Govt is providing assistance these days.

That is cool. But no 20 anything.

Maybe the majority of Aussie's just would not use anything lighter that 5W-40? You see how many discussions we American's still have with 5W-20 and it has been in mainstream use for over a decade now?

The majority of the people that I know do nothing more than check the dipstick, and most take it to the dealer for service.

If Toyota (or whoever) really believed that something W-20 was the correct answer for their engines, then :
a) they would mention same in their manuals; and
b) would include it in their factory services

The average Aussie punter just wouldn't know that this was in their engine anyway .

Spent most of the weekend doing 100,000km service on my Nissan.

it DOES mention 5W-20, but only below -10C...

-5 had all the diesels at work unable to run on Friday, so I guess 5W-20 is moot at that point

I think there's a couple like Redline, and Pentrite race stuff.

Can't speak for Pentrite but Red Line doesn't make a true 20wt oil. Most 10w30s are lighter than Red Line 5W-20 with it's HTHSV of 3.3cP and low 145 VI.

You do get FUCHS Titan GT-1 0W-20 in OZ which is at least a true 20wt oil albeit still on the heavy side.

I agree with the statement re Redline, and it's something I've been saying on the board for ages...economy is more related to HTHS than KV...redline in particular

I think the reason the many OEMs who have adopted 20wt oils in NA and Europe haven't expanded the practice to other countries including OZ has a lot to do with your mild to hot climate, the lack of politically mandated fuel economy requirements and a engrained thick oil culture.
The latter reason would and propabily has resulted in an inevitable "push-back" from dealership personnel.

Australians would never accept the "1 quart per 1,000 miles" as being acceptable consumption on a new car.

the 20W-50s that were run for aeons wouldn't get to 1 litre in 5,000km, at 200,000km before people considered it was time to work on them.

Shell introduced 15w30 XMO in the 80s, which developed a reputation for ruining engines by running out between services...there was nothing W-30 for ages after that until Holden got burned when they introduced 30s in the Commodores, and people started emptying the sumps between services.

The super high viscosity (Penrite, STP etc.) were never part of the scene until the really late 80s and early 90s, when all of a sudden the oil companies started pushing "added protection"...Penrite's "Plus 10 for Australian Conditions" was successful, although ludicrous.

Petrogas Melbourne import Kendall Motor Oil products from the states, I have been using Full synthetic 5w-20 in my Mazda 3, it loves the stuff, towing boat on trailer does not use a drop.
Best kept secret.
They have not yet imported the titanium formulae in this grade but have other higher grades, as they say they do not sell a lot of 5w-20.
After reading article by AEHAS some 2 year ago I took the plunge and have not looked back.
Also use Mobil 1 5w30 in my Ford XR6 Turbo, it is excellent, everything is clean as a whistle and the turbo spins up quick.
I have oil pressure guage and oil temp, plenty of pressure and engine runs cooler.

Was in my local Repco shop, and they had Castrol Edge 0W-20 with titanium in 20L drums.

Guess I'm starting to see it around now.

Is this the stuff that the Merc and Audi dealers sell??

I cannot find this stuff anywhere, not even online. (I even called Fuchs/Silkolene USA, and they could not even locate it!!!

)
