NO thermal compound available, what can i use......

on ignition modules, instead of the thermal grease, I've noticed mfgr's are including dielectric grease instead.

I however still use cpu heatsink thermal grease tho...

but if it's good enough for an ignitor.....

On a processor/heatsink combination? Ive seen different adhesive pads.

Really you just want to help provide more intimate contact. Something soft with a bit of give. A grease would be best, vice a solid, IMO. I wonder what the thermal conductivity of a moly-fortified grease is.

Whatever it is, remember, less is more.

I might use copper or Nickel antiseize. Clean it well before using the right stuff.

If it doesn't work on a CPU you will be in trouble. They can fry in seconds without proper thermal paste and heatsink.

+1 Ive seen artic silver there. Expensive, but better than frying a chip.

Don't most chips have built-in overheat protection nowadays?

Yes, the thermal protection will likely disable it. It's not a risk worth taking in my opinion. Just get the right stuff.

With some sort of heatsink it will probably live, but I have seen people fire up a board without the heatsink and the CPU can fry in seconds. It gets hot quick enough that the thermal shutdown can't kick in.

Just get the right stuff. The thermal protection is meant to protect against a broken CPU fan or a heatsink with clogged fins. Without any heatsink the temp will shoot over the critical mark so fast that thermal protection won't have a chance to save it.

What it be a little better if you could put a good-sized cpu heatsink on the ignition module?

true

Just go to bestbuy and pick up a tube of Dynex white thermal compound. That will work fine until you can get the good stuff- Arctic Silver 5, Tuniq TX-2, etc.
