My 331,000 mi Land Cruiser is smoking, making a blue cloud when starting up hot and if its sits for a day or so it will blue smoke on cold start up.
Have been using Rotella T syn 5w40 for about 7 yrs and 100,000+ miles. This change I when to 15w40 dino Rotella HDO and it still smokes the same. I know the HDO have changed due to emissions and not sure if the change has anything to do with my old motor.

Is there a better oil for my very high mile vehicle or do I need an oil additive? If so what is a good no smoke additive?

start up smoke indicates valve seals and additives for that usually are a bust. A high mileage oil may condition the seals but 331,000 is along time for a seal to be expected to live. Carboned up stuck oil control rings will cause smoke that may not be noticeable once the converter get up to temp. I would be optimistic and consider doing valve seals. Thats a bunch of miles.

Wow that Land Cruiser is def. something to be proud of with that many miles. But as willix said it would be best to do a valve job and not waste your money on trying additives.

Don't just do a valve job or your oil control rings will start passing oil. Any time you do just the head or the shortblock on an engine with that many miles it will make the other worse. Does it smoke on acceleration or deceleration?

It is not smoking during acceleration or deceleration.
With this many miles condition of the vehicle it is not cost effective to do a complete rebuild. When the motor goes it will be parts.
In the meantime its my daily driver and it runs great. Just took it on a cross country road trip with only a small oil leak problem.

Contrary to what many are saying, 331,000 miles is not unusually high miles for a Toyota Land Cruiser.

I don't believe it could be stuck rings since you have consistently used a HDEO. I second the valve seal theory, though if you can live with the smoke at startup then I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep going...

PS- What year Cruiser?

I've replaced just valve stem seals for friends that had start up smoke and oil use issues. It was a cheap and easy fix, I've never done it on anything but an American made car. But it did help get some more useful life from an engine and reduce oil use. JMO

Very good point. Before the rebuild, my old Ford 300 didn't burn any oil. Had all the oil I had to add actually been consumed is in burned, I wouldn't have a driveway mess like I do now. As it stands, I'm taking bids from the big three to see if anyone wants to buy the oil rights to my driveway.
